Plus this in Globo HD TS 9600 (Opticum HD TS 9600) Cardsharing support has been improved and new emulators have been added, which can be useful for adjusting to a variety of servers. We tested the operation of the receiver on a test version of firmware 3.19 through specialized servers on the Internet, as a result of which the timing of opening channels was significantly improved, regardless of the encodings used and averaged only 2-3 seconds. Moreover, without any sound freezes, picture freezes and other little things during viewing that could occur when using outdated firmware. Perhaps this is a good indicator for this category of receivers.

Additionally in

In the July issue of Mediasat, we already introduced our readers to the budget HDTV receiver Orton X403P. In this issue, readers are presented with a review of the Orton HD TS 9600 combo receiver. What is the difference between these devices, besides a slight difference in price? There is essentially only one significant difference - the ability to receive terrestrial digital TV. Now you can buy one receiver and use it to watch both broadcast and satellite television. However, do not rush to rejoice, because this receiver is only capable of receiving signals in the DVB-T/MPEG4 standard. It so happened that our country delayed the introduction of digital broadcasting for a long time, and at one stage, indeed, the DVB-T/MPEG4 standard was adopted as the basis. This stage lasted a long time, while in some regions of Ukraine test broadcasting was launched in this standard. Apparently, the manufacturers decided that this is exactly how everything would be and began producing receiving client equipment. This year the situation has changed. We all know about the Napoleonic plans of the ZEONBUD company, and also that broadcasting will be carried out in the DVB-T2 standard. The Orton HD TS 9600 simply cannot receive a signal in this standard. Considering all of the above, one could miss this feature of the receiver and consider it as a regular HDTV satellite receiver. However, this would be reckless, since in the near future the manufacturer may release a combo receiver for DVB-T2, and, knowing the shortcomings of the “younger” models, it will be possible to avoid mistakes in the future.

Appearance and technical characteristics

Description, as usual, we start with the box. It is quite informative and does not look like a “black box”. It shows the front panel of the receiver and lists the main advantages:

— Support SD / HD (MPEG4 AVC/H.264);
— Two slots for conditional access modules;
— Two slots for conditional access cards;
— Symbol speed from 1 to 45 ms/s;
— Output image resolution: 576p, 720p, 1080i;
— Multilingual menu;
— Eight favorites lists with no restrictions on the number of channels;
— S/PDIF (Digital audio output with Dolby AC3 support);
— Compatible with Unicable, DiSEqC 1.2 and USALS;
— Software update via RS-232C and USB.

CPU:
  • Processor: STi7101;
  • Flash memory: 8 MB;
  • RAM: 192 MB.

Of all this, it is worth noting a number of advantages.
Firstly, there are two slots for conditional access modules and two card readers. If the user plans to watch not only paid satellite television, but also paid terrestrial television, these functions may be needed. Let's note this as an absolute advantage of a combo receiver.

Satellite tuner:
  • Input frequency: 950MHz to 2150MHz;
  • Input level: -65 dBm~-25 dBm;
  • Converter power: 13 /18VDC / 500mA Max.
Over-the-air tuner:
  • Input frequency: 174-230, 470-862 MHz (VHF, UHF);
  • Frequency band: 7 or 8MHz;
  • Input noise level: -75 to -20dBm;
  • Input impedance: 75Ω.

Secondly, there is an IR connector for an external IR sensor, that is, the receiver can be hidden in a bedside table or behind the TV, and controlled by pointing the remote control at the IR sensor. Appearance the receiver is strict. The front panel features a functional round steel-gray button. It’s worth saying right away that in STANDBY mode its outline is highlighted, and this, as they say, is not for everybody; some will find it original, but others will be a little bothered.

Back panel
  • RCA image, audio L and R, YPbPr;
  • SCART;
  • S/PDIF coaxial, (optional optical);
  • HDMI 1.2;
  • USB, IR connector for external IR sensor, RS232, Ethernet (optional).

The remote control has a somewhat unusual button layout. For example, the FAV button (calling up favorite lists) is located at the bottom, which is a little inconvenient, since it is used quite often. But, as you know, a person can get used to anything.
As a small drawback, we can also note the absence of an HDMI cable in the kit.

Turning on and setting up the receiver for the first time

The first thing users do after turning it on is pay attention to what localization options the receiver software offers. The software of this device contains both Russian and Ukrainian localization.

It is worth noting that Ukrainian localization is not entirely complete, so to test the receiver we will use the Russian-language menu.

The operation of the receiver with over-the-air channels in the DVB-T standard was tested in Kyiv. Searching for channels is quite simple; to do this, you need to go to Menu-Installation-Manual search (terrestrial).

It should be noted that automatic scanning of the entire frequency band (VHF + UHF) took 2 minutes. 10 seconds, which is a pretty good result. Switching between channels took between one and two seconds depending on the format. Switching from MPEG2 to MPEG4 takes one second, and in other cases, incl. and in reverse order - two seconds.

Scanning of satellite transponders is also performed in the “Installation” menu item. The device offers two search options: automatic and manual.

We checked the performance of the device with channels in high definition format, as well as with low- and high-speed streams. The receiver passed this test with honor.

To complete the search testing, we scanned channels in the DVB-S2 standard. Here the device also showed itself with the best side, there are no complaints about the work. The only thing worth noting is the need to wait for several seconds for the signal level to appear on all transponders.

Orton HD TS 9600 works stably with the WinQuest MR460 motor in USALS mode.

Working with a hard drive

There is one USB connector on the rear panel of the device, thanks to which you can connect flash drives or external HDD drives to the receiver for recording TV programs, Time Shift mode and software updates. Considering new models of receivers capable of receiving high-definition television, we have already begun to get used to the presence of media player functions in them. Unfortunately, this feature is not implemented in this receiver, although the device is capable of playing back its own recordings, which are saved in the *.trp format. Note that this format can be played on a computer using a number of fairly common media players.
Before we consider working with USB, it is necessary to dwell on some features. The receiver did not see two models of external hard drives. These were hard disks without its own power supply, respectively, as external storage Either flash drives or HDD drives with self-powered. However, one nuance was also noticed in working with the latter; it relates to “parking” hard drive (automatic shutdown during downtime). After some time of use, it may turn out that there are no records on the disk, although the space occupied by them is displayed. This happens when the disk was turned on before the receiver and was in “parking”. The solution to this problem is quite simple: first you need to turn on the receiver, and only then the HDD drive.

Watching TV channels

Using the Orton HD TS 9600 receiver is quite simple; as they say, it is for housewives. The channel editor has standard view for models of this brand, which has all the necessary functions. As mentioned above, users of this device have the opportunity to create eight favorite lists.
Working with the Electronic Program Guide (EPG) is possible in two versions, which are demonstrated in Fig. 9.

The operation of teletext was tested on the Inter TV channel. Unfortunately, teletext does not work correctly because the characters are displayed in Latin.

Software update

Updating the software of this device is quite simple. To do this, just write a file with software to a “flash drive”, which, in turn, needs to be connected to the USB port of the receiver. Then, in the “Software Update” menu item, select this file and press the “OK” button on the remote control.

conclusions

Of course, this combo receiver has its advantages and disadvantages. But you shouldn’t judge it too harshly, since the device belongs to the budget class, while the main functions work well and stably. Therefore, we can say with confidence that it will find its fans, for whom the functionality that this model has is quite sufficient.

  • the presence of two slots and two card readers for modules and conditional access cards;
  • the presence of two tuners (terrestrial and satellite);
  • software update via USB;
  • no HDMI cable included;
  • Teletext does not work correctly;
  • 0/12V output does not work;
  • There are no media player functions.
