Samsung Galaxy A3 - Specifications. Review of the smartphone Samsung Galaxy A3: stylish "average" Samsung galaxy a3 display size

A-series, positioned by the manufacturer as a balanced and affordable device of the middle class.

A3 came to our test - one of the few compact smartphones on the market with a screen diagonal of 4.7 inches, which is doomed to popularity due to the lack of any decent analogues. A review of the younger model Samsung Galaxy A3 will show what the company has offered its new users and whether it is worth buying a phone for such a price.

Price and main characteristics

The cost of A3 ranges from $320. Given the small supply of RAM and built-in memory, the mark of 20,000 rubles can be considered slightly overpriced, however, Samsung and the adequate pricing that Chinese manufacturers have taught us to do is an incompatible concept.

Specifications:

The smartphone runs on Android 6.0.1 with a proprietary Grace UX shell. Phone will be upgraded soon new version operating system 7.0, the update has already been officially announced.

Equipment and appearance

The package includes:
Smartphone;
Charging unit;
USB type C cable, adapter to microUSB;
Headphones;
Lockpick for the SIM card tray;
Documentation.

Externally, the A3 is practically no different from the older models of the A-series. The display of the smartphone is covered with 2.5D Corning Gorilla Glass 4, back panel also made of glass. All this is complemented by a metal frame, which gives the A3 the look of a very stylish and expensive gadget. Available in four body colors: gold, blue, black and grey.

The smartphone screen occupies approximately 67% of the entire area of the front side. Under it there is a hardware button "Home" (part-time fingerprint scanner), as well as touch pads "Back" and "Tasks", which are highlighted at the moment of touch.

At the top of the front panel is a speaker, proximity and lighting sensors, as well as a 5-megapixel front camera. An innovation that not everyone will like is the lack of LED indicator events.

The noise-canceling microphone and combo SIM slot are on the top.

On the left side there are only two buttons for volume control.

On the right is the screen power button and the main speaker. Such an arrangement was not chosen by chance: the sound of the speaker is not blocked if you put the phone on the front or back surface on the table.

At the bottom, there is a 3.5mm headset jack, a microphone, and a USB Type-C port.

The back of the smartphone looks a bit empty. There is only a 13-megapixel camera, a flash and the company's signature logo just below.

grini back cover the A3 is slightly rounded towards the metal frame. Thanks to its compact dimensions, the phone is very convenient to use, it can be easily held with one hand even on the go. The gadget is practically not felt in a trouser pocket.

The A3 enclosure is IP68 certified. The smartphone is almost completely protected from moisture and dust. It can be under water at a depth of up to 1.5 meters for half an hour. Of course, once again without the need to test protection is not worth it.

Samsung is positioning the younger model of the A-series as a gadget for active people who value compactness and convenience. The typical A3 buyer doesn't care about benchmarks or screen size. There are not so many worthy devices with a 4.7-inch screen left on the smartphone market (not counting the iPhone SE). And if you are tired of "shovels" - A3 is definitely your choice.

Screen

The Samsung Galaxy A3 is equipped with a 4.7-inch Super AMOLED display with HD resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels. The pixel density is 312 ppi. You can distinguish the graininess of the picture, for this you have to peer into the display from a distance of 5-6 centimeters. During normal use of a smartphone, the screen quality does not disappoint, it has good contrast, almost maximum viewing angles and slightly oversaturated color reproduction, traditional for all Amoleds.

Also, there is no air gap between the touchscreen and the sensor. The first supports only up to 5 touches. In the smartphone settings, you can select the display mode that suits the color temperature. A software blue color filter is provided, which reduces eye strain when reading text on a white background for a long time. The display brightness is enough for comfortable use both at night and in direct sunlight.

The screen of the smartphone is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 4. It is scratch-resistant and can withstand drops on hard surfaces from a height of 1-1.5 meters without noticeable damage. In the A-line of 2017, an innovation appeared - AlwaysOn Display. Now information about new events is displayed even when the screen is off. Special technology minimizes power consumption in standby mode, so using AlwaysOn has almost no effect on time battery life.

Performance

Inside the smartphone is an eight-core Samsung Exynos 7 Octa 7870 chipset, made using 14nm technology. The maximum frequency is 1.6 GHz. Such a processor has already been used in the Samsung J7 model. The video accelerator Mali-T830 is responsible for the graphics.

The amount of built-in memory is 16 GB. Out of the box, the user has access to about 9.7 GB. Storage can be expanded via microSD up to 256 GB. 2 GB random access memory enough for most everyday tasks.

The hardware component of the A3 corresponds to the average price category of smartphones. In Antutu and other benchmarks, the phone shows satisfactory results for such devices. The performance of A3 is definitely enough for the average user (web surfing, video, light games). At maximum Wot Blitz graphics settings, the smartphone produces about 35-45 frames per second, but there is a lack of performance margin, so this smartphone is definitely not for gamers.

Camera

The front 8-megapixel camera is not equipped with autofocus, so you will have to find a suitable distance to the object in the frame yourself. With the help of the built-in application, you can slightly correct the selfie.

The main 13-megapixel camera has autofocus, HDR and PRO mode (manual adjustment of white balance, ISO and exposure compensation).

The quality of pictures in normal lighting will please even sophisticated users. Frames please with a good dynamic range, detail, rich colors and accurate white balance.

At dusk, a small amount of noise appears, but they do not greatly affect the picture. The noise reduction algorithm can blur fine details.

HDR operation in an environment with a small difference in brightness does not bring the desired effect. But in the presence of a bright light source, HDR significantly improves image quality.

The maximum video resolution is Full HD at 30 frames per second.

speaker, sound quality

If the phone is in your pocket, incoming call can be easily missed due to the low volume of the main speaker. Otherwise, its sound is quite clear, listening to music does not cause discomfort.

Standard headphones are included in the package. You should not expect anything supernatural from them, their sound quality is average. There are no complaints about the work of the conversational dynamics. The noise reduction system works at a high level, cutting out the excess from the environment. Thanks to her, you can make out the words of the interlocutor even in public transport.

Battery

Battery life depends on non-removable lithium ion battery at 2350 mAh. Despite the small amount of battery, Samsung "keeps" on one charge for about two days in normal mode. This is due to the presence of an energy-efficient Exynos 7870 Octa processor and a Super AMOLED matrix.

In the video playback mode with the maximum screen brightness, the Galaxy A3 lasted about 17 hours. With a heavy load, the battery will sit down in about 10 hours. The smartphone does not have a mode fast charging, but it is, in fact, not needed. The phone charges up to 100% in an hour and a half. There is a power saving mode that limits the brightness of the display and the frequency of the processor.

Communication and Internet

The navigational abilities of the A3 are beyond praise. A cold start lasts no longer than 10 seconds, GPS / GLONASS quickly finds and binds to the necessary satellites.

All required LTE standards are supported. cellular will work perfectly in almost any region of the CIS.

The new A-series supports Samsung Pay. For its operation, an NFC chip is built into the smartphone. Data exchange takes place via Bluetooth 4.2 and Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac 2.4+5GHz. In Repeater mode, the smartphone can distribute Wi-Fi to other devices, working as an access point. Also worth using USB interface Type C, through which you can connect a variety of external devices to the A3.

Competitors, conclusion

What can be said about the Samsung Galaxy A3 after the test? First of all, it is a compact model for everyday tasks. There are not so many smartphones with a screen diagonal of 4.7 inches on the market. A3 can offer full protection from moisture and dust, good autonomy and high-quality camera. The smartphone is suitable for people with an active lifestyle who value compactness and simplicity.

But some buyers are outraged about the price of the device. In their opinion, the Galaxy A3 is significantly inferior in terms of technical characteristics to Chinese smartphones, the cost of which is almost three times less. But it should be understood that these are players of different weight categories, oriented to completely different audiences.

The main rivals of the model are iPhone SE and Sony Xperia X Compact. The advantage of the first is a better camera. However, the iPhone is significantly more expensive, has a completely different design, and does not have an AlwaysOn Display. X Compact is similar in technical specifications. Again, it is more expensive and not waterproof.

The significant design update of the Galaxy A series compared to last year's series has brought new case materials and hardware solutions to the middle class of smartphones. Until recently, the tandem of glass and metal was the prerogative of top solutions, but times are changing. Most recently, we had two older models of the series on the test: and. Today we will get acquainted with the younger model: Samsung Galaxy A3 (2016).

Design

The appearance of the Galaxy A3 smartphone is a continuation of the Galaxy S6 line and is significantly different in better side from last year's Galaxy A3 (2015). This is achieved thanks to the quality of workmanship and materials.

The body of the smartphone is made of metal and covered on both sides with rounded glass 2.5D Gorilla Glass 4. A high-quality oleophobic coating practically eliminates the appearance of fingerprints on the glass, but increases the overall slipperiness of the device. The metal case is rounded, but has flat side edges for a more secure grip.

The smartphone is available in four colors: black, gold, white and pink. We got a model in gold color for the test.

Location of controls and functional elements, typical for Samsung models Galaxy of the latest generations. In the upper part of the front panel, there are proximity and light sensors, a speaker and a front camera peephole.

At the bottom, a hardware home button (without a scanner) and a pair of blue-lit touch buttons. On the left side there are volume buttons, on the right side there is a smartphone power button and a dual nano SIM card tray.

This allows you to use or two nano SIM cards, or change one to microSD (up to 128 GB supported). On the upper edge of the case there is a slot for the noise reduction speaker, on the bottom you can find 3.5mm mini-jack connectors, micro USB, speaker and microphone hole. At the back is the main camera module and LED flash.

There is not the slightest complaint about the build quality, everything is done at a high level with excellent fit of parts. Hardware buttons have a nice distinct response. rounded edges and thin bezels display make the device as compact as possible, allowing you to use it with one hand.Comparing the Galaxy A3 2015 and 2016, many positive changes are immediately noticeable.

However, one of the most important is that Samsung used high-quality materials (2.5D Gorilla Glass 4th generation + metal body) and a new display.

Display

The Samsung Galaxy A3 (2016) has a 4.7-inch Super AMOLED screen with a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels. Pixelation of small text takes place, but is noticeable upon very close examination. The display has no air gap, and the pixel density is 312 dpi.

Automatic backlight adjustment works correctly and quickly adjusts to changes in lighting. Viewing angles are wide, color reproduction and contrast are good, with deep blacks characteristic of Super AMOLED. In the display settings, it is possible to change the "Screen Modes" by choosing from 4 preset profiles. The default is "Adaptive Display".

In general, the screen can be described as decent, with wide viewing angles, a typical Super AMOLED color temperature and a good oleophobic coating. We note the excellent behavior of the display in the sun, the information is easy to read, without color degradation.

Hardware

Samsung Galaxy A3 (2016) is based on the Exynos 7 Octa 7580 processor with an operating frequency of 1.5 GHz and the Mali-T720 video adapter.

The device has 1.5 GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal memory. It is possible to expand the memory by installing microSD memory cards (up to 128 GB). Of course, by today's standards, 1.5 GB of RAM is not so much, I would like to see more, but Samsung has clearly prioritized the Galaxy A series (Galaxy A3 - 1.5 GB of RAM, Galaxy A5 - 2 GB of RAM, Galaxy A7 - 3 GB RAM).

In general, the performance of the Samsung Galaxy A3 is average, the tests carried out showed the following results:

Communication options represented by wireless modules WiFi standard 802.11 a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.1, NFC and GPS (A-GPS, GLONASS, Beidou).

During the test, there were no problems with signal reception and transmission. The sound of the spoken and external speaker did not cause any complaints.

Interface

The software part of the Samsung Galaxy A3 is based on Android OS version 5.1.1 and TouchWiz Nature UX proprietary shell version 5.0. It is well recognizable due to the fact that it is used on other models of the company.

The lock screen displays the clock, weather, missed events sorted by date. It is also possible to quickly go to the phone book or launch the camera.

The built-in Smart Manager program allows you to visually monitor the main parameters of the smartphone (the amount of RAM, internal memory, virus scanning, battery consumption) and clear the memory if necessary.

We note a nice feature, the Home button has additional functionality: launching the camera by double-clicking when the device is locked and the ability to answer an incoming call.

Camera

Samsung Galaxy A3 is equipped with two camera modules, 13 MP and 5 MP. Both cameras have the same f / 1.9 aperture, but unlike the older versions (Galaxy A5, A7), the main module lacks optical stabilization. The maximum resolution for video recording is 1920x1080 pixels at 30 frames per second. The camera interface is simple and clear, nothing superfluous and complicated. There are basic modes and effects of image processing.

The quality of the pictures can be generally described as average, the picture lacks overall sharpness when viewed on the monitor, but on the smartphone screen the picture looks good.

autonomy

Samsung Galaxy A3 (2016) equipped with non-removable battery at 2300 mAh, which is 400 mAh more than its predecessor. During the battery test, the screen brightness was set to 200 cd/m². The test device performed well in the PCMark test, lasting 9 hours and 6 minutes, running out of power from 100% to 21%.

In real conditions of use (calls, Internet surfing, watching videos and photos), the Samsung Galaxy A3 (2016) lasted 2 days and 2 hours, at 5 hours 40 minutes active screen, which is a good indicator.

Minuses: there is no fingerprint scanner, as in older models; absence of an event indicator; no optical camera stabilization

Conclusion: Samsung Galaxy A3 (2016) is characterized by compact body size, modern design and good materials. The balanced technical characteristics are rather designed for the audience looking for a long-playing device with small dimensions and a decent screen. In general, the smartphone performed well in all aspects, naturally it lacks some features (fingerprint scanner, optical stabilization), but do not forget that this is the youngest model in Samsung lineup Galaxy A.

AT Samsung series Galaxy A includes smartphones in multi-colored, all-metal cases, due to the coloring reminiscent of plastic. Devices that received the same, catchy design differ in their filling and screen sizes. To begin with, Vesti.Hi-tech tested the youngest model - A3.

As you know, until recently, Samsung Electronics did not use metal at all in the design of its smartphones. Perhaps they were embarrassed by the problems arising from manufacturers who in this way tried to provide a premium look for their devices. The first Android devices with a metal frame were and. But at the end of last year, the company announced the launch of a whole series of Galaxy A smartphones, made in a single design and in all-metal, multi-colored cases. Today it includes models A3, A5 and A7 with screen sizes of 4.5; 5 and 5.5 inches, respectively. It is interesting that all these devices received, although different, but not at all premium stuffing. The color scheme with an abundance of options provides the newly-minted devices with a catchy and stylish appearance. It is not clear, however, why it was necessary to use metal for cases, in order to then paint it "under plastic".

Design, ergonomics

by the most budget option in the new line of Galaxy A is the younger model - A3. Of course, its dimensions have nothing to do with the paper format of the same name (297x420 mm). Against. Equipped with a 4.5-inch screen, the smartphone turned out to be "classically" compact (130.1x65.5 mm) and rather thin (6.9 mm), like, for example, (6.9 mm).

The A3 is only 0.2mm thicker than the 6.7mm model, which is considered the thinnest of its Galaxy brethren. And the weight of the A3 is small - a little more than 110 grams.

In general, in comparison with today's fashionable tablet phones, this device seems frankly small - a kind of lady's little thing. It is not for nothing that among the multi-colored cases, in addition to the strict - black and white, elegant - silver and gold, there are also glamorous ones - pink and blue.

Although the case of the A3 model, unlike, say, from, is completely made of metal, only the silvery bevels of the rim running around the entire perimeter remind of the presence of the latter.

In particular, the white paint with a mother-of-pearl tint on the model we got for testing skillfully stylized the metal as a matte, literally velvet, plastic. It is clear that in the cold it is almost impossible to confuse these two materials by touch. Well, in home-office conditions, to find out the truth, it remains, perhaps, to put the device in the refrigerator (which, of course, is not worth doing unnecessarily).

Samsung smartphones are distinguished by the continuity of the design of the front panel. And A3 does not violate this tradition.

In the upper part of its front panel, covered with a protective glass of the new generation Corning Gorilla Glass 4, right above the Samsung logo, they placed a speaker grille, light and proximity sensors, as well as a front camera lens.

Below the display are two dedicated touch buttons"Back" and "Recent applications" with the indispensable mechanical key "Home" between them.

The volume rocker was placed on the left edge of the device,

and on the right - the lock power button, as well as two closed slots with trays. The taller and larger one is combo and can accept both a nanoSIM card and a microSD card. The second, which is lower and smaller, is intended only for the second subscriber identity module (but also in nanoSIM format). In general, hello iPhone and hello i-clip, although you can, as usual, use its clerical counterpart as a lock pick for trays.

At the bottom of the case, they assembled a hole for a "talk" microphone, a microUSB connector for charging and synchronization, as well as a 3.5 mm audio headset jack.

At the top end there is only a hole for the second microphone.

Not forgetting about another Samsung logo, holes for an LED flash, a lens with a chrome-plated edging of the main camera, as well as a grille for a "multimedia" ("caller") speaker were provided in the upper part of the non-removable rear panel,

and service information was applied at the bottom.

Due to its compactness and light weight, the smartphone fits perfectly in almost any, even the most elegant hand, and the familiar button layout makes it even more comfortable to use. And the screen size makes it easy to operate this device with one hand. The non-separable case A3 obviously excludes any backlash and squeaks.

Screen, camera, sound

Model A3 received a Super AMOLED display with a diagonal of 4.5 inches and a rather low resolution of 960x540 pixels (qHD). Recall that the total number of dots on a qHD screen is one quarter of Full HD (1920x1080). At the same time, the density of pixels per inch is at least 245 ppi. The scheme with two subpixels (PenTile RGBG), based on the physiology of the human eye, has replaced the traditional one with three subpixels (RGB) in the matrix used (Super AMOLED).

As you know, in Super AMOLED displays, which provide "real" deep blacks, unlike conventional AMOLEDs, the air gap between the touch layer and the matrix has disappeared, which made it possible to increase brightness, reduce light reflection, and also reduce the already economical ( due to lack of backlight) power consumption. Such a screen has good anti-reflective properties, which makes it easy to use it even in bright light.

The A3's touchscreen supports multi-touch, with MultiTouch Tester showing that only up to five simultaneous taps are recognized. To the viewing angles of the display questions, in general, no. Due to the presence of a light sensor, the brightness level of the backlight can be set not only manually, but also using automatic adjustment. The "Adaptive display" option, which works for some applications (including "Play Books", "Gallery", "Camera"), automatically adjusts not only the brightness, but also other image parameters, depending on the ambient light, as well as how the smartphone is used . It is claimed that this can significantly reduce the strain on the user's eyes. In turn, manual adjustment of the color gamut allows you to stop at a more comfortable color reproduction. In addition to the main mode, two more are available - "AMOLED Movie" and "AMOLED Photo".

The screen in the A3 is protected by a protective glass of the new generation Gorilla Glass 4. So, at least, it is stated on the Corning website, although, to be honest, the glass in the test sample of the smartphone did not impress in any way (it looks as usual). If Gorilla Glass 3 with NDR (Native Damage Resistance) technology was positioned to protect against various daily threats, then when creating Gorilla Glass 4, they focused only on falling. At least published crash test results have shown this glass to be at least twice as crack resistant as its competitors.

Despite the low resolution, the A3 screen, unless, of course, pressing your nose against it, trying to see the PenTile, leaves a good impression. At least the test videos in HD-quality looked quite decent on this display.

The Galaxy A3 smartphone for the main camera got an ordinary 8-megapixel photo module with a fairly fast autofocus and flash. The maximum frame size is achieved at an aspect ratio of 4:3 (8 MP) and is 3264x2448 pixels. The image quality is quite consistent with the device of the middle class, especially in good light. Sample photos can be viewed (Dropbox).

In addition to Auto, the Camera app interface offers the following shooting modes - Touch Up, Panorama, Auto Selfie, Continuous Shooting, Rich Tones, Night, and GIF Animation . In the settings, you can select the desired image size and video resolution, turn on the flash, decide on the white balance, exposure value, etc. Three filters are also available here - "Negative", "Sepia" and "Grayscale". The volume rocker can easily be assigned to release the shutter, start video recording, or digital zoom. Frequently used touch buttons in the settings are conveniently moved to the top of the screen, where the settings, flash, and camera change icons are located by default.

As for the front camera, it was equipped with a 5-megapixel matrix, which clearly exceeds the usual needs of Skype video calls, but allows you to make pretty high-quality selfies. After all, the maximum frame size with an aspect ratio of 4:3 (5 MP) is 2576x1932 pixels. For lovers of "crossbows" there are three modes here - "Self-portrait", "GIF-animation" and "Group selfie" (groove). In the settings, you can take selfies using gestures, as well as simple tools for adjusting self-portraits.

The GIF animation mode allows you to take up to 20 consecutive frames and then automatically merge them into one animated gif file.

Both cameras can record videos in Full HD quality (resolution 1920x1080 pixels, 16:9) at a frame rate of 30 fps. During this process, you can take photos with a resolution of 3264x1836 pixels (6 MP, 16:9) for the main camera, and 2576x1449 pixels (3.7 MP, 16:9) for the front camera. All video content is stored in MP4 container files (AVC - video, AAC - sound).

Having received only one speaker, the device, nevertheless, reproduces music quite well - its sound is quite clear, although the volume control range could be increased. Even if the smartphone is lying on a flat surface “on its back”, the speaker grill does not overlap, as this is prevented by the chrome edging of the lens of the main photomodule, which protrudes a couple of millimeters.

The A3 has a built-in FM tuner that supports online recording of any radio broadcast. Recall that as shortwave antenna be sure to connect a wired headset or headphones to your smartphone.

Filling, performance

The Galaxy A3 smartphone received a 4-core Snapdragon 410 (MSM8916) chip from Qualcomm, which is made taking into account the design standards of 28 nm. This is the company's first 64-bit processor that uses the ARMv8 instruction set and ARM Cortex-A53 core architecture, running here at a clock speed of 1.2 GHz.

Graphics acceleration is handled by the on-chip Adreno 306 (400 MHz) coprocessor. The signal processor located in the same place supports photomodules with matrices up to 13 MP and video recording with Full HD 1080p quality. The Snapdragon 410 has a built-in LTE modem that supports the absolute majority of the world's 4G / LTE and 3G networks, while providing work with two, or even three SIM-cards. There are also wireless communications Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, NFC, a multi-system receiver for satellite navigation (GPS / GLONASS / Beidou) and FM radio.

The basic configuration of the tested smartphone includes 1 GB of RAM, which is quite a bit by modern standards, especially considering the memory-hungry TouchWiz shell. Therefore, the results obtained in tests for the A3 model are, in principle, not bad, but far from record-breaking. Note that the chips of the 400th series are positioned for middle-class devices, while they are promoted as optimal choice in terms of price-performance ratio.

On synthetic tests AnTuTu Benchmark version 5.6.1 new model was at the bottom of the displayed list of results, earning a total of 18,819 "virtual parrots".

On the Vellamo benchmarks, in terms of the amount of "horsepower" (Metal) and the efficiency of using processor cores (Multicore), the smartphone did not stand out in any way, which only confirmed the filling of the "average".

If we forget about the low screen resolution (960x544 pixels), then for the two main settings on the Epic Citadel visual test, the results of the A3 turned out to be simply flagship. Thus, the average frame rate for High Performance and High Quality (performance at the expense of quality and vice versa) was 59.1 and 58.1 fps, respectively. And the result for the Ultra High Quality setting was also, in general, not so bad - 44.2 fps.

The non-record results on the 3DMark universal gaming benchmark, obtained, in particular, on the Ice Storm Extreme test recommended for this smartphone, do not look like a tragedy. Recall that the A3 model is not at all positioned for cool 3D games.

Of the 16 GB of internal memory in the A3, only about 11.9 GB is available, and even less is free. For expansion, there is a slot for microSD / HC / XC memory cards with a maximum capacity of 64 GB. There is no support for USB-OTG technology in the device.

As already noted, wireless interfaces are supported on the new Snapdragon 410 chip, of which IEEE 802.11 b / g / n (one frequency band 2.4 GHz), Bluetooth 4.0 (LE), and NFC are implemented in A3. When installing a SIM card (nanoSIM), not only 2G / 3G cellular networks are available, but also LTE - 4G Cat. 4 (150 Mbps). It is possible to install two such subscriber identification modules (both 4FF formats), but then you will have to abandon the card to expand the built-in memory, which is not very cool.

When determining its location on the AndroiTS GPS Test program, the test instance of the smartphone was limited to only A-GPS, for some reason ignoring the satellites from the GPS and GLONASS constellations. Most likely, this is a bug of the test device, although the first thing I wanted to do was to sin on the problems of antennas in a completely metal case.

The Samsung Galaxy A3 smartphone received a non-removable lithium-ion battery of a very small capacity - 1,900 mAh. However, according to the manufacturer, on a single charge you can talk on the 3G network for up to 12 hours, surf the Internet via 3G/LTE/Wi-Fi, respectively, 8/8/11 hours, listen to music up to 60 hours or watch videos up to 11 o'clock. In our testing, a set of MP4 and HD quality videos at full brightness played continuously for about 6 hours.

In addition, on the tests of the AnTuTu Tester 2.5 battery, the device honestly earned a fairly decent number of points (7,301). This is largely due to the low resolution (540x960 pixels) and screen technology (Super AMOLED).

The A3's settings offer an "Extreme Power Saving" option, where battery saving comes from limiting a number of functions (reducing the number of available applications, temporarily disabling communications, and using a simplified grayscale home screen theme).

To save power for location and navigation, you can only use WiFi data and mobile networks(A-GPS mode).

Software

Galaxy A3 is running an operating system Android systems 4.4.4 (KitKat) with the familiar from other smartphones Samsung branded shell TouchWiz. Her appearance compared, for example, with premium models, it has not changed, but only the most necessary functionality has remained.

In the TouchWiz interface, application icons, widgets and folders, as usual, are placed on desktops, while there is a separate menu for programs. The main settings, having retained their structure, are collected in a single vertical list with bright flat icons.

From preinstalled apps worth noting good file manager, Galaxy Apps recommendation service and S Planner calendar.

Purchase, conclusions

According to "Yandex.Market" average price on the Samsung Galaxy A3 is currently 19,990 rubles, which is clearly dissonant with the modest stuffing of this device. In addition, the low resolution of the screen does not cause delight, as well as alternative installation second SIM card or memory card. However, A3 has something to brag about, for example, a new 64-bit platform, good battery life and next-generation Corning Glass Gorilla 4 protective glass. Yes, and support for LTE in mid-range devices is still not so common.

Of course, the A3 model will be appreciated by those who are primarily interested in the compactness of a smartphone, for example, women. They will certainly be attracted by the stylish appearance of this device - a metal thin body and its glamorous coloring. In addition, the Galaxy A3 can be recommended to all Samsung fans who want a smartphone with a catchy, premium exterior, but do not need a powerful stuffing at all.

The results of the review of the smartphone Samsung Galaxy A3

Pros:

  • Compact design
  • New 64-bit platform
  • Protective glass Corning Gorilla Glass 4
  • Good battery life
  • LTE support

Minuses:

  • Much more expensive than other smartphones with similar features
  • Low screen resolution
  • The second SIM card excludes the installation of a memory card

The youngest in the new A-line of Samsung smartphones. The model captivates with its stylish design and minimal dimensions - the thickness of its all-metal case is only 6.9 mm. In addition, there is a good filling here: a 4.5-inch Super AMOLED display, a 4-core processor, 1 GB of RAM and a 1900 mAh battery. Looks interesting at first glance, doesn't it? Well, more details about the features of the device and its cost further.

Design and functional elements

Galaxy A3 attracts with its stylish design, which is still new for Samsung devices: it looks fashionable and expensive. The all-metal body, painted on the sides and the back panel in white with a beautiful mother-of-pearl shade with a matte texture, is something that captivates at first sight.

Without paint, the manufacturer decided to leave only neat beveled edges on the ends. They reminded me of "apple" smartphones, as well as the Galaxy Alpha model previously presented by Samsung itself.

Yes, perhaps, in unpainted metal, the Galaxy A3 would have looked much more solid, but the presence of paint, as for me, absolutely does not spoil the overall pleasant impression of the appearance of the smartphone. Plus, the material turned out to be quite scratch resistant and does not collect fingerprints. Pleases with the richness and variety of colors: white, black, blue, golden.

Due to its small dimensions - 130.1x65.5x6.9 mm, Galaxy A3 is easy to operate, including with one hand. Ergonomics does not cause absolutely any complaints - it is easy to reach all the necessary functional elements. The thumb lies exactly on the power button, equipped on the right side, and the index finger on the volume rocker, located on the left.

The case is not collapsible - the smartphone in the hand feels monolithic - no backlash and extraneous squeaks. Accordingly, two retractable slots for nano SIM-cards are placed on one of the sides. One of them, by the way, if desired, can be used not for a SIM card, but for a microSD card.

At the bottom there is a microphone, a 3.5 mm headphone jack and a micro-USB port, and at the top there is a noise reduction microphone output.

Most of the front side is occupied by a 4.5-inch screen. Above it are proximity/light sensors, a 5-megapixel camera peephole and a cut-out speaker. Under the screen, there is a physical home button and two backlit touch buttons.

The functional elements on the back panel are a small mesh of a multimedia speaker, an LED flash and an 8MP camera lens, framed by a metal rim and protruding significantly above the body of the gadget.

Display

The Galaxy A3 is equipped with a 4.5-inch display, small by today's standards, with a resolution of only 960x540 pixels. The density of pixels per inch is 245. Pixelation is noticeable only close to the screen.

The smartphone uses a Super AMOLED matrix. The display is characterized by excellent viewing angles, good color reproduction and brightness. The latter has both manual and automatic adjustment. The ability to adjust color reproduction is implemented on the page with a choice of profiles, one of which implies automatic adjustment.

The front surface of the screen is covered with glass with a mirror-smooth surface, resistant to scratches and fingerprints. The direct rays of the sun will not be such an annoying problem for the readability of information on the screen.

The touch capacitive layer recognizes up to 5 simultaneous touches and has good sensitivity, while the finger glides over the surface quite easily.

Memory

Problems with free space for new files in the case of the Galaxy A3, I did not have. Since 16 GB of on-board memory can be expanded up to 64 GB via microSD cards if desired. But USB support For some reason, the manufacturer did not provide OTG - connect external drive smartphone is not allowed.

Equipment and performance

Behind the premium materials of the Galaxy A3 case, as it turned out, the hardware of a typical state employee is hidden: 4-core Qualcomm processor Snapdragon 410 MSM8916 clocked at 1.2 GHz with Adreno 306 graphics and 1 GB of RAM.

It cannot be called the best in class in terms of performance, but in general, it copes well with everyday tasks: it plays HD video with ease, the Asphalt 8 3D race works quite well on it.

Wireless modules and communications

The set of communication interfaces Galaxy A3 is quite traditional for the modern market: Bluetooth 4.0; ANT+; GPS with A-GPS, GLONASS and Beidou.

I also note that the "troika" works fine in Wi-Fi networks of b / g / n (2.4 GHz) standards and can distribute Wi-Fi. In addition, the smartphone was equipped with an NFC chip.

The device supports 2G GSM and 3G WCDMA communication standards.

Battery

One full charge of the Galaxy A3 battery with a capacity of 1900 mAh with fairly active use, which includes frequent “surfing” on the Web, as well as telephone conversations and SMS communication, will last no more than a day.

Although if you activate the extreme power saving mode, which limits the number of available applications, and the screen color changes to shades of gray, then the battery life can be significantly extended - up to 2-3 days.

Speakers

The speaker of the smartphone perfectly transmits speech - during communication there are no extraneous sounds.

Multimedia plays clean and smooth throughout the entire volume range. Its power is enough for comfortable watching movies or listening to audio in a room isolated from extraneous noise. The only inconvenience that may arise is the accidental overlapping of the speaker with your hand while holding the novelty in a horizontal orientation.

cameras

The front camera of the smartphone with a resolution of 5 MP not only provides good quality pictures in the process of video calling in Skype, but also allows you to take self-portraits of decent quality.

You can also take photos with a palm gesture. There are also group selfie and GIF animation modes.

The main camera in a smartphone with a resolution of 8 MP, autofocus, LED flash, as well as a large number of settings. You can adjust, for example, ISO, white balance, exposure, add a geotag, choose the method of taking pictures: by voice, by pressing the volume key, by clicking on any point on the screen. Among the available modes: Night, Panorama, continuous shooting, Retouch, etc.

Made in quality Galaxy camera A3 photo I was satisfied - they have good sharpness, noises, if any, are moderate.

ON

Samsung Galaxy A3 runs on Android 4.4.4 KitKat operating system. On top of the "OS" from Google, a proprietary shell is installed - TouchWiz of the latest version, but with somewhat reduced functionality compared to the flagships. So, for example, there are no S Health applications, Children's mode, Dropbox service, and many others familiar to Samsung handsets. But there is FM radio, S Planner and the Galaxy Apps store.

From interesting features shell, you can also highlight the "Simple" screen mode, which involves a simplified display layout and large icons.

conclusions

Well, the Galaxy A3 is one of the first smartphones from the Korean giant that finally looks interesting. Against the background of numerous competitors, it stands out in the first place with an excellently assembled all-metal case, which makes its design expensive. In addition, it is impossible not to note the high-quality speakers and good cameras device, as well as the ability, if necessary, to use the microSD card slot as a second SIM card.

But in terms of hardware, this is a typical mid-ranger, the performance of which, however, is enough to comfortably perform everyday tasks. Given the price tag of $180, the main drawbacks of the smartphone include a low screen resolution and a simplified TouchWiz interface.

Positioning

In 2014, the decline in sales of Samsung smartphones in the mid-range segment became noticeable, one of the main reasons was the very average characteristics compared to Chinese manufacturers, which made Samsung devices not very attractive with the same case materials and comparable chipsets. The company's strategy for 2015 has been completely revised, in particular, a large number of models will be abandoned, each price segment will present its own "heroes", devices with an optimal price / quality ratio. It would be a mistake to assume that the A-series was the result of a change in course, these are one of the last devices that were developed within the framework of the old strategy. The fact that today they are trying to squeeze them into a new positioning and show a change in course is quite logical and understandable, but this should not confuse us - the A series models appeared as a response to inexpensive iPhones, those models that came out a couple of years ago, but are sold as the most available iPhones. No other competitors were considered for this line, and therefore no emphasis was placed on performance across the entire market. Also, a very accurate characteristic of all devices created to fight Apple is the use of nanoSIM cards, they are not used in mass devices, but are used only in those devices that must compete directly with the iPhone. Per recent times Samsung released one such device - Samsung Alpha, it was the first device with a metal frame around the body. He was not expected to enter the mass segment and was considered quite niche in the company.

Unexpectedly, it turned out that this device has become massive and in demand on the market. I will specifically make a reservation that within the framework of my niche. It remains a mystery to me why many people saw in it a design that differs from other Samsung devices, although of all the differences, only the metal frame around the case can be mentioned - outwardly it is a typical Samsung, it is extremely difficult to find differences.

In the A-series, the company will present three devices, two of them have already been announced, these are A3 and A5, A7 remained outside the first announcement. The difference between these models is that inside the filling is somewhat different, but the main difference is the screen size, in A3 it is 4.5 inches, in A5 it is 5 inches, in A7 it will be 5.5 inches. At the same time, the design of the case for all devices is absolutely the same, as well as the design, due to this they are combined into a series.

It seems very far-fetched to me that such products can attract iPhone buyers or do it in bulk, after all, Apple managed to create a separate piece of the market that does not accept substitute products, this is not a story about the same or best performance, similar design and the like. The choice of iPhone is often irrational, it is the choice of the brand. And the creation of direct competitors for this product, as a rule, does not lead to sensible results. Another thing is that the A-series turned out to be quite interesting in terms of design, materials, but by no means cost and characteristics - this is a sort of iPhone for the Android market. And here many questions arise, since the cost of such solutions is quite high.

The positioning of the A-series can be described as simple smartphones with the latest version of Android for those who are looking for good case materials, but not maximum performance. Devices for one-handed operation, in many ways similar in positioning to conventional iPhones. Let's figure out together what is sensible in them, as well as what disadvantages are present.

Design, dimensions, controls

For a long time buyers have suggested that the metal case is a premium material and they are willing to pay extra money for it. In many respects, the fashion for metal cases was introduced by the iPhone, but the same Samsung already had experience in the production of such devices, and real sales showed that the metal in the design is not decisive when choosing a phone. Moreover, in the presence of the same models with comparable characteristics, the one with a metal case was bought noticeably worse. All this forced not to go on experiments and not to produce such devices. However, in 2014, an increasing number of companies began to use metal in the construction of their devices, in particular, the frames around the case became metal (aluminum or stainless steel), and at that moment Samsung's lag became critical, since it was no longer one model, but many of those that are present in the Android smartphone market.

Samsung believes, and quite rightly, that the presence of a collapsible case is an advantage for the consumer - he can independently change the battery, comfortably install a SIM card. At the same time, a certain part of buyers is ready to sacrifice these advantages in order to get an all-metal case, and it is for such people that the A-series was released.

Compared to Samsung A5

The metal frame goes around the case, everything here is similar to Samsung Alpha or Note 4, the edges are exactly the same, they also play in the light. But the entire back panel is also made of metal, although it is painted over in the color of the case. It has several recesses for antennas, but they are not visible due to uniform shading. This is a conscious decision, since the same iPhone uses either a plastic insert (as on the iPhone 6) or an insert on the back panel, as in the iPhone 5/5s, which is knocked out of the design of the device. Samsung considered that the appearance of the device should be unified, and achieved this with this approach.

Color schemes for A3 are quite diverse - initially the devices appear in white, black, blue, golden and pink colors, later other options may appear. The white color has a pearly tint, it is not matte, it plays well in the light. An attempt to deliberately scratch it shows that scratches appear, but they are not visible unless you look closely.

The fact that Samsung decided to paint the sides of the device in the color of the body, not leave them entirely metal, has already caused idle fiction for Note 4, some people “saw” that it was plastic covered with foil, considered a 3.5 mm jack, in which they also saw plastic. As in Note 4, and in the entire A-series, this is an all-metal frame a few millimeters thick. There is no plastic here, the A3 also has a metal back, and it is quite durable and massive. The device will easily survive the fall, but I have not tried it for such a fashionable bend - with effort, any metal device can be bent, the only question is what kind of effort it will be. In A3, you have to try very hard to bend the device.

What is the point of making the phone case in the color of metal and showing it, I do not understand. On the streets, I have never met cars with metal bodies that were not covered with paint. Why this is required from the phone remains a mystery to me, especially since all metal phone cases are painted in one way or another, usually it is metal-like painting. It sounds funny, but metal is painted to look like metal so that you have the appropriate impression. Samsung's approach to the A-series is quite understandable, the phones look very nice on the outside, and feel the same in the hands.

I'll start with a simple one - by squeezing the phone in your hands, you will not be able to achieve either a crunch or any backlash. Nothing. The assembly, as usual, is on top, and there is nothing to complain about. The dimensions of the phone are 130.1x65.5x6.9 mm, and the weight is 110 grams. Very compact, fits well in the hand.

The controls are traditionally located, the volume rocker is on the left side, and the on/off button is on the right side. There are also two slots for nanoSIM cards, in one slot there is also a combined holder for a microSD card. The device has two microphones, they are located at the ends. At the bottom there is a regular microUSB connector, as well as a 3.5 mm jack for a headset or headphones.

The front camera is located above the screen, there is also a light sensor, as well as proximity. Under the screen - two touch and one mechanical button.

Display

The weakest point of the A3 is the screen - 4.5 inches with qHD resolution, that is 540x960 pixels (245 dpi). Just because it's a SuperAMOLED that supports maximum power saving mode doesn't get rid of the issue of such a small display resolution. The only explanation I see is that the resolution of the 3.5-inch iPhone screen 4/4s - 640x960 pixels, and this model is tipped to compete with this device, with a number of reservations. The iPhone 4S 8 GB is still present and actively sold on the market, and the device from Samsung is its competitor.

Certainly in modern phone At this level of cost, I would like to see at least an HD screen. The fact that the A3 uses a qHD-matrix, albeit SuperAMOLED, seems to me a mistake. On the other hand, for an ordinary consumer who uses the phone for calls, the Internet from time to time, and this permission is quite enough, the example of the iPhone proves this well. For more advanced users, this will obviously not be enough.

In terms of color rendering, picture quality, the screen in A3 is good, but not the best. Comparing it to the current generation Samsung devices, you can see the difference, in many ways it is described by the difference in resolution. There are no complaints about the brightness, the picture is clear. When automatically adjusting the brightness of the backlight, you can see that it is not always the maximum, it can often seem dim. On the other hand, this level is optimal and provides a fairly long battery life.

Battery

The built-in Li-Ion battery has a capacity of 1900 mAh, which is quite a bit by modern standards. For example, the Galaxy Alpha has a 1860 mAh battery, but the chipset is made using 20 nm technology, although it is more powerful, eight-core. Here the chipset is based on 28 nm technology, but from Qualcomm, and it has less power. As a result, it appears that it can provide longer run times.

Video playback time is about 10.5 hours, which is typical for all devices from Samsung. With real use of the phone, you can achieve two days of confident work with an hour of calls, two dozen messages, a couple of hours of listening to music. With a very heavy load, the device will work for only one day, but for example, with the same load, the S5 will sit down at about one in the afternoon. The use of an optimized chipset makes itself felt, this is a new generation device in terms of improved runtime. Although it all depends on what and how you use it on it, how you set up all the parameters.

Full battery charging time is just under two hours. Fast charging technology, as in Note 4, is not supported here.

Memory, RAM, chipset and performance

In most markets, a model with LTE support will be presented, it is the highest in cost and is built on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 chipset - MSM8916, four A53 64-bit cores, frequency up to 1.2 GHz. This chipset is one of the best in the middle price segment, it is quite productive, while offering good performance for reasonable money. The amount of RAM is 1 GB, the built-in memory is 16 GB, of which about 12 GB is available to the user. Memory cards are supported up to 64 GB, which will be enough for most.

There is an unusual feature in the A-series devices in that it is impossible to use two SIM-cards and a memory card at the same time. In the second slot, either a memory card or a SIM card can be installed, but not both at the same time. Therefore, you will have to choose what is more important for you - you should keep this in mind when you choose a device.

In synthetic tests, this chipset does not show maximum results, but this does not affect performance in any way, everything works quite well and quickly.

Of the pluses, I note that the chipset allows you to achieve a long operating time from a single charge, unlike the previous generation models.

Communication options

It's all pretty typical. USB version 2, there is support for NFC, Ant+, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0 LE, built-in LTE modem supports LTE Advanced Cat.4.

Camera

The front camera does not have autofocus, but has a resolution of 5 megapixels, which is not bad.

The main camera is 8-megapixel, it is similar in characteristics to the cameras that were in the flagships a couple of years ago, it produces good picture quality, as you can see for yourself.

Software

The device has the latest android version 4.4.4 with the TouchWiz shell, it is also the latest version, as on the company's flagships. There are almost no differences from the same S5, so I refer you to the relevant part of the review.

Unlike top models, there is a built-in FM radio, which looks like a nice bonus.

But the phone lacks the apps that have become familiar to older models, for example, there is no S Health, which takes into account your steps, as well as physical activity. The kit contains almost no applications that the company gives with older devices, or subscriptions to services (the same Dropbox is not included in the kit). A fairly modest set of applications, which is understandable against the background of flagships, but it is not clear why there is, for example, a children's mode or the like. It looks as if the A-series exists somehow separately from the main backbone of Samsung models. For some, this can become a serious limitation, so it is better to know about it in advance. Otherwise, this is a typical device from Samsung, in which TouchWiz is slightly redesigned, since the screen does not allow you to implement all the features - from the unpleasant point of view, I note the absence of icons quick launch in the blind, to which many are accustomed.
