The price starts at $1,000; for Russians, the new product will cost at least 79,990 rubles. Meanwhile, the iPhone X is not the only smartphone with this design. Lifehacker found 10 more “frameless” ones, and they are all cheaper.

1. Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+

South Korean flagships Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ are equipped with screens of 5.8 and 6.2 inches, respectively. There are no side frames at all, and the edges are smoothly rounded. There may not be a dual camera with optical zoom, but in terms of security, smartphones are no less worthy than: they can identify the owner by the iris of the eye. There is also facial recognition, but the camera works using a two-dimensional algorithm, not taking into account depth, and therefore the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ can be unlocked with a photo.

The official price for S8+ is 54,990 and 59,990 rubles, respectively.

Popular Samsung phablet Galaxy Note 2017 also got an infinity screen, but with a diagonal of 6.3 inches. And its edges are not as steep as those of the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+, because there must be room in the case for the S Pen. The camera has become double, there is a 2x optical zoom. The security features are the same as in the G8: an iris scanner and an unreliable facial recognition system.

The official price in Russia is 69,990 rubles.

3. LG G6

Unfortunately, the flagship LG G6 was deprived of popular attention, although the phrase “got a solid screen before it became mainstream” is about it. There's a 5.7-inch Quad HD Plus FullVision display with Dolby Vision and HDR10 technologies and an 18:9 aspect ratio, but LG chose an IPS matrix, and therefore it became impossible to get rid of the side frames by curving the panel.

The LG G6's dual camera features wide-angle and standard lenses with 125° and 71° angles, respectively. Facial recognition is available, but LG warns: “The feature provides less security to the phone compared to other methods, such as graphic key, PIN, Password and Fingerprint.”

The official price of LG G6 in Russia is 39,990 rubles.

LG equipped the flagship V30 with a 6-inch P-OLED screen with an aspect ratio of 18:9, however, like in the G6, it did not round the edges or remove the side frames. Notably, the LG V30 is smaller in size than the OnePlus 5 with a regular 5.5-inch 16:9 display.

The dual camera is created according to the same logic as the G6. One lens is wide-angle at 120°, the other is normal at 71°. Moreover, the camera is so cool that David Franco, director of photography for Game of Thrones, took part in the presentation of the smartphone.

There are no innovations in terms of security here.

The start of sales in South Korea is scheduled for September 21. The smartphone will then go to North America, Asia, Europe, Africa and the Middle East. The price is expected to be around $700 - about 40,000 rubles.

A mysterious smartphone from the “father of Android” Andy Rubin appeared in American online stores in early August without any announcement. The camera of Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 is traditional “one-eyed”, but on a Sony IMX386 sensor and with optical stabilization. Xiaomi didn’t bother with security measures.

The price in the maximum configuration on the Chinese market is 3,999 yuan (about 35,000 rubles).

Xiaomi says the huge 6.4- inch screen spread over 91.3% of the front panel, but measurements showed that no more than 84%. In general, it’s also not bad. The edges are not rounded, and therefore there are still small frames.

The camera is average, with an OmniVision sensor and no optical image stabilization. Facial recognition using neural networks, machine learning and an infrared camera? Of course not!

In the top configuration it will cost between 35–40 thousand rubles.

Once upon a time, it was Sharp that released the first truly frameless smartphone, and the tradition continues. Sharp Aquos 2 is a mid-ranger with a 5.5-inch 4K screen that covers 87.5% of the front panel and has a small cutout on top for the selfie camera. To be honest, I've only used the iPhone X once. And in this short time you can understand whether the device is convenient or not. In the case of the X, after about 30 seconds you understand that in general this form factor is pleasant, and the entire useful area of ​​the display is really used.

The notch in the display is, of course, a controversial issue. Some people like it, some don't. In the case of the iPhone X and the device from Oppo, I like it because the whole point is not in the notch, but in the same size of frames around the entire perimeter of the device. It is the same thickness of the frames both on the sides, bottom and top that creates a very pleasant feeling during use.

Apple created the notch for a reason. Marketers understood perfectly well what such a decision would lead to. They knew that others would begin to follow the trend set by Apple. And so it happened. MWC 2018 gave us an idea of ​​where the market will move in 2018. And if Android fans chuckled at the notch in the display, now they will have to come to terms with it, because almost all flagship - and not only flagship - smartphones will now have a notch.

Below I will present all the smartphones that I know of with a notched display, and at the same time I will comment on each of the solutions.

The photo below is Lite. He looks, frankly, terrible. The cutout at the top is okay, but why then make such a huge frame at the bottom? You need to choose one of the two, otherwise the meaning of one of the decisions is lost. Or you make a frame at the bottom, as Xiaomi did with Mi MIX 2, or a cutout in the display. Otherwise, the end result is a mess of everything incomprehensible.

In the case of OnePlus 6, the situation is slightly better, because the frame at the bottom is noticeably smaller and almost equal to the side frames. However, due to the enlarged lower frame, the smartphone still looks weaker than the iPhone X. Although, of course, the solutions from Huawei are better.

One of the Huawei P20 renders also appeared on the Internet. It’s still difficult to say what model this is, but it can be characterized with one rhetorical question: why is this button at the bottom needed? The smartphone looks ridiculous, and let's admit it.

The photo below shows the flagship device from Oppo. And so far this is the best implementation of a notch in the display, because there is no bottom frame to spoil the whole effect. Oppo was copied, they did it blatantly, but they succeeded, unlike the others.

Doogee V is a budget device from a little-known Chinese company. The cost of the device will most likely be about 150-200 dollars. For this money we get a scanner in the display and quite good design. Yes, there is a frame at the bottom, but the price tag in this case should save the situation.

ZenFone 5. Also a pretty good implementation. And, in my opinion, Asus approached it very professionally. They tried to do it their own way, tried to bring something of their own into a similar form factor and did it well. A truly shameless smartphone, yes, there is a frame at the bottom, but it is not so large, and in general the shell and design are very harmonious. Well done.

The cheapest frameless smartphone you can find on sale. Even used or broken ones cannot be cheaper. What can you ask for for 6 thousand? Works? Already great! And it is also compact.

9. “Xiaomi clone”: Vernee Mix 2

This smartphone will seem familiar to all fans of Chinese devices - you will see a similar one at the very end of the article. However, the cheap Vernee offers a balance of characteristics and a nice price - it is 3 times cheaper than the Xiaomi Mix! Inside, the filling is decent by the standards of 2017: 6-inch IPS display with a resolution of 2160 x 1080 (Quad HD), budget Helio P25 platform, 4 GB of RAM and 64 permanent memory, a good dual camera and Android 7.0.

8. Successful copy: VKworld S8

Samsung S8 clone for an affordable price. The company has managed to establish itself as a manufacturer of fairly good state-of-the-art phones, so their S8 turned out to be a good smart phone. The savings are almost unnoticeable: 6-inch original LG Quad HD screen, memory and samsung battery, dual camera of tolerable quality. The only let down was the processor - like most of the Chinese, VKworld uses the weak MediaTek. Nevertheless, in total it turns out to be a good alternative to cheap Xiaomi.

7. Workhorse: Elephone S8

Another Mix smartphone: this time with a 6-inch edge-to-edge 18:9 display with Quad HD resolution. To get ahead of the competition, Elephone used a powerful, energy-efficient Helio X25 processor and equipped the device with an impressive 5,100 mAh battery. They did not make a fashionable dual camera - instead there is one high-quality “eye”. By the way, this S8 has a stylish glass body on a metal frame: rounded edges and feng shui.

6. The main Chinese frameless phone: OPPO F5

The new OPPO F5 has: a cool 20 MP selfie camera with a 1/2.8-inch sensor and a good main one; face recognition function; 6-inch screen with 2160 x 1080 resolution without protrusions; a lot of functions to reduce eye fatigue; metal case 7.5 millimeters thick with the thinnest antennas on top. CPU is lagging - in use MediaTek Helio P23 (MT6763T). But there are 2 SIM cards and a separate slot for MicroSD.

First generation frameless Xiaomi smartphones still sold in Chinese stores. The lack of frames and a bunch of innovative solutions negate the real benefits of the device: stylish, fashionable - but easily damaged and still damp. Quiet speaker and no camera - the price for a huge 6.4-inch screen that occupies 84% ​​of the front panel. However, it was Mi Mix that became the ancestor of all the monotonous Chinese crafts presented in the article.

2. Updated: Xiaomi Mi Mix 2

Xiaomi has had its share of troubles with frameless smartphones. Therefore, the new Mi Mix 2 has frames and the screen is smaller. As a user of these models, I’ll be honest - it’s good that there are frames, and the screen has decreased to 6 inches and has an aspect ratio of 18: 9 (read our review). Useful screen area - 93% of the front panel. You have to pay for style: no earpiece, no 3.5 mm jack. The picture is completed by an unexpectedly mediocre Sony IMX386 camera with optical stabilization. But the smartphone is 2.5 times cheaper than the iPhone X.

Externally Huawei Nova very reminiscent of Huawei Honor 8, although the thickness of the device has increased slightly - to 7.5 mm. To some extent, Xiaomi Redmi 4 Pro is an excellent replacement for the iPhones and Samsungs that our youth are chasing. In our opinion, the white version of Xiaomi Redmi 4 Pro can be perfect for students and young girls. The black version is more of a masculine theme.

8. Apple iPhone 5s

Despite the time that has passed since the announcement, iPhone 5s remains the best-selling Apple smartphone in Russia. We simply could not not include it in our rating. The phone is available in 16GB and 64GB versions. The device works quickly, the karting on the 4-inch screen is super clear and bright. The iPhone 5s camera does an excellent job, taking high-quality photos with both the main and front cameras.

As you can see, there is a rather large choice. Today there are a sufficient number of very competitive manufacturers, the number of which is growing every day. Judging by the characteristics of many devices, most of them are even more powerful than new smartphones from Apple, and the execution and materials are no worse. We have presented only the most interesting options, the price of which is even lower than that stated for the iPhone 6. Note that almost all presented smartphones have enough good batteries and screens with a diagonal of at least 4.7 inches.

What about our autonomy? The iPhone 7 has a 1960 mAh battery, the Samaung Galaxy S8 has a 3000 mAh battery. But these are just numbers, what in life? In talk mode, the first lasts up to 14 hours, and the second shows all 20. In listening mode iPhone music 7 will last 40 hours, and Samaung Galaxy S8 up to 67 hours.
