Nokia N9 with MeeGo operating system, use

It's time to talk about the operating system used in the Nokia N9 phone - MeeGo. This mobile OS is notable because the N9 is the first smartphone to use it. And, apparently, the last one. Although no, that would be disingenuous - MeeGo is remarkable in itself. Let's see what's what.

Nokia C2-03 and Nokia C2-06 - two-card, stylish, touchscreen

Recently Nokia company did not release phones at all that support two SIM cards at the same time, but now provides a choice of several models at once. So far, the most functional of them are Nokia C2-03 and Nokia C2-06. However, the only difference between them is the color scheme of the case. Both new products from the Finnish company have several advantages. Let's get to know them better.

Model C6-01 is the youngest smartphone in the new line of Nokia devices based on the Symbian^3 operating system. Despite this fact, the device does not suffer from a lack of functionality; on the contrary, it is built on the same platform as the flagship models.

Nokia C6-01

Build quality, screen, ringer volume, battery life

Camera without autofocus, software bugs, vibration alert

Verdict

Design, build quality

The design of the C6-01 differs from other Nokia smartphones based on Symbian^3; in appearance, the device is more reminiscent of the successor to the popular 5800 model, but in a more austere style. The body of the device is made of metal and well assembled, the only removable element is back cover, fits tightly and does not play. But it can be removed quite easily, so it is difficult to predict how the locking mechanism will perform during long-term use. In hand Nokia C6-01 It fits well, which is facilitated by the streamlined shape of the case, but the thickness of this model is large by modern standards, almost 14 mm.

Display

The entire front panel of the device is occupied by a capacitive 3.2-inch AMOLED screen with a resolution of 640x360 pixels. At the same time it is covered protective glass and supports ClearBlack technology, which improves its behavior in the sun. If you really want to, scratching the display coating is quite possible, so it’s better not to try. In addition, the surface of the screen quickly becomes dirty; the glass collects fingerprints very well, but removing them is not difficult. ClearBlack technology really improves the behavior of the display in the sun; it looks better than conventional AMOLED panels, but it still fades in bright light.

Ergonomics

The main control in the C6-01 is the touch screen, which, despite its relatively small size, is quite convenient in everyday use. The display responds well to pressing and has Multi-Touch support. Apart from the screen, everything else the smartphone is controlled by mechanical buttons. Unlike other Symbian^3 models, the C6-01, in addition to the menu key, has mechanical buttons for accepting and ending calls, which certainly improve the experience of working with the device. On the left side of the device there are volume keys, a screen lock/unlock slider and a camera shutter button. At the bottom there is a micro-USB port, a 3.5 mm headphone jack and a standard Nokia charger socket.

Interface

Works Nokia C6-01 running the Symbian^3 operating system. This version of the platform has many small changes, but in general, its capabilities are not much different from Symbian S60 5th edition. Among the innovations we can note the new mail client, a social networking app, an updated media player, OVI maps, and the OVI Store. The system on the C6-01 works stably, but sometimes flaws in the software still appear, it seems that this is everyone’s problem latest versions Symbian^3 and Nokia plans to release a radical update for the system in the next few months, called Anna.

Performance

In terms of performance, Nokia C6-01 completely replicates the older models; the device uses a processor with a frequency of 680 MHz, 256 MB of RAM and 1 GB of NAND memory for storing user data. At the same time, 340 MB of internal memory is allocated for installing applications, which can be expanded up to 32 GB via a microSD slot. The device's operating speed is average, with noticeable delays when launching applications, viewing photo galleries and working in the browser. Since the C6-01 completely replicates the hardware flagship smartphones Nokia, performance issues should be fixed with release new version Symbian^3. The hardware in the device cannot be called powerful by today's standards, but it should be enough for normal operation OS, so the problems here are more likely to be code optimization.

Camera

Like most latest smartphones Nokia C6-01 is equipped with an 8-megapixel camera with fixed focus and dual LED flash. At good lighting The camera takes high-quality, phone-quality pictures, but as the lighting worsens, the detail of the picture will decrease. The camera's fixed focus prevents it from capturing text and objects when a short distance. But the device can record video in 720p resolution.

Exploitation

IN Nokia C6-01 A 1050 mAh battery is installed, which is enough for two days of active use of the smartphone. The device has one built-in external speaker, the volume of which will be enough to not miss a call even in a very noisy place. But the vibration alert in the phone is weak, you can easily not feel it. Volume conversational dynamics in C6-01 is located on good level, the interlocutor can be heard in almost any conditions, although there are no additional noise reduction systems in the device. During its operation, the smartphone did not have any problems with operation in the operator’s network, as well as when connecting to Wi-Fi.

conclusions

This Nokia model is positioned as a youth smartphone; it is well assembled and equipped, but it is inferior to its competitors in terms of performance and still needs optimization software. Also, using a camera with a fixed focus on a smartphone does not seem to be the most optimal solution.

A smartphone running the updated Symbian^3 operating system. They have more modest capabilities than the flagship and, accordingly, a more affordable price. The advantages of both devices include capacitive displays with a resolution of 640x360 pixels, an interesting design and 8-megapixel cameras with HD video recording. Potential disadvantages: the lack of autofocus along with 8 megapixels looks like an unbalanced solution. Doesn’t make new products more popular operating system Symbian is poorly suited (compared to its competitors) to work with touch screens and receiving an increasing number of claims every month. Let's try to find out how much preliminary correspondence impressions differ from reality.

The Nokia C6 and C7 models (or rather, C6-01 and C7-00, since Nokia already has one C6 device) became the second and third smartphones after the Nokia N8 running the updated Symbian^3 operating system. The Symbian operating system, which is poorly adapted (compared to its competitors) for working with touch screens and is receiving an increasing number of complaints every month, does not add to the popularity of the new products. Let's try to find out how much preliminary correspondence impressions differ from reality.

Technical characteristics and equipment of Nokia C6-01 and Nokia C7-00

It’s worth saying right away that both devices are very close, so it makes sense to consider them together. Apart from the differences in displays, battery capacity and built-in 8 GB storage in the Nokia C7-00, then in terms of hardware their capabilities are equal - the same processor, the same camera, the same amount of built-in memory and the same capabilities. It is worth saying that the Nokia C6-01 display uses proprietary ClearBlack technology, which should provide better job in the bright sun. At the same time, its physical dimensions are slightly smaller than those of the Nokia C7-00 with the same resolution.

After installing the drivers (I have the OVI Suite package installed, they are installed automatically, you just need to connect the phone to the computer via a USB cable), not only the memory card, but also inner memory phone becomes “visible” in Windows Explorer. In the case of the Nokia C7-00, a capacity of 360 megabytes does not make a difference, but for the Nokia C6-01 this memory is enough “for the first time”, but it is better to immediately buy at least an 8 GB memory card upon purchase, since the prices for them vary with each other every month it gets lower and lower.

4 The equipment of both phones is absolutely the same: the box contains instruction manuals in Russian and Ukrainian, a short reference guide (in Russian and Ukrainian) for working with OVI services, Charger with a 2 mm plug, a USB cable (for some reason the Nokia C7-00 has a very short one), a simple headset with a clothespin and, in fact, the phone itself.

The headphones on both phones are extremely simple, if not cheap. They are without seals or any pads. These usually fall out of my ears easily. Their sound is ordinary (more like mediocre), that is, at the very least it will suit, but for amateurs good sound It's probably worth taking care of something more serious. However, such users already have their favorite headphones, which can be connected to the phone via a standard connector.

There is a huge answer button on the headset cord.

And a large clothespin (the black hole on the body is a microphone).

Appearance of Nokia C6-01

I’ll say right away that the Nokia C6-01 looks much more attractive in real life than in the pictures. It has some kind of charisma of its own and in general, in my opinion, it bears the features of those same Nokia candybars (to me it most closely resembles the successful model 6233), for which phones from this company have always been valued. In any case, the tactile sensations are exactly like that. The display is very sensitive, works great, unfortunately, we can’t find bright sunshine in February, so we’ll postpone final conclusions about ClearBlack technology until spring, when it’s time to get acquainted with the Nokia E7.

Two of the three buttons at the bottom of the display are hidden. They are illuminated when working with the phone and traditionally serve to answer and reject a call - accordingly, on the left is a key with a green handset, on the right - with a red one. The central key, as you might guess, calls up the menu.

The bottom part of the device contains a microUSB connector (I have already said more than once that now I like open cable connectors much more - too often today you have to connect your phone to a computer), a headphone jack (this placement has always seemed more logical to me, since we use a phone put it in your pocket with the bottom up, and not vice versa) and the socket for the charger.

The rim of the case is covered with polished (chrome-like) plastic. It looks beautiful, somewhat sloppy due to the remaining prints, but photographing, of course, such glare surfaces is a thankless task. On the right side there is a camera key (a kick to almost all Android models), a paired volume rocker and a screen lock lever, used for the first time, if I’m not confusing anything, Sony Ericsson, but now only Nokia is actively used. The mechanism is convenient, especially since the ribbed surface prevents your finger from slipping.

The cover of the Nokia C6-01 is metal, moves easily and does not become loose from use (at least not in a couple of weeks). Please note that the lid is made in the form of a trough, that is, thanks to its curved edges, it partially plays the role of a sidewall.

The memory card slot is located under the cover, but does not require turning off the phone and removing the battery to replace the card.

Appearance of Nokia C7-00

What catches your eye when you first look at the Nokia C7-00 is its thin body and mirror surface around the touch display. In fact, the 3.5-inch display is not the largest today, and the body is thin, but in comparison with the Nokia C6-01, for some reason it looks like a “shovel”, although this is a purely subjective opinion.

This phone also has three hardware keys, but the call answer keys are not disguised, as is the case with the Nokia C6-01. All three buttons are backlit, although the central one is noticeably brighter than its C6-01 counterpart.

Another difference from the Nokia C6-01 is that all connectors are located at the top, not the bottom, and the microUSB is still covered with a cap. Another difference from the C6-01 is the matte plastic case. It looks noticeably less easily soiled, and more austere and respectable. For some reason, a voice command key was added between the volume buttons. Frankly, I have never met people who in real life, and not in words, use voice commands. Therefore, this use of the button seems far-fetched. As far as I understand, it cannot be reassigned. But you can attach a function for taking screenshots to it, which I did not fail to use.

The screen of the Nokia C7-00, like the Nokia N8, has a bluish tint. I don’t know what’s going on with the ClearBlack technology (we’re waiting for summer), which I must admit, I was traditionally skeptical about, but the screen of the Nokia N8 (and it’s very similar to the one used on the C7-00, except perhaps without a protective Gorilla Glass coating) I managed to look at it in the still bright autumn sun and it made a surprisingly very good impression. There is a suspicion that the Nokia C7-00 will perform very well in bright sunlight, and will only be inferior to screens with a mirror backing. But the main thing is that for some reason after it I immediately believed in the capabilities of ClearBlack, which is somehow uncharacteristic for me, since my duty requires me to doubt and check everything.

Despite the beautiful placement of the two speakers on either side of the slightly raised camera module, they do not provide stereo sound. There are just two of them.

An interesting feature of the Nokia C7-00 is the ability to hot-swappable SIM cards. I don’t know who will be very happy about this, but it is a fact. When you replace the card, of course, the phone will reboot. The SIM card is removed according to exactly the same principle as memory cards in slotted slots - there is a spring-loaded mechanism inside. To remove the card, you need to press it slightly and it will come out freely, pushed by a spring.

But the memory card slot is hidden under the battery, you won’t find it right away.

Pay attention to the contacts located on the metal cover and the antenna outputs on the body. Either a coincidence, or the consequences of the fight against the now defunct “antennagate” of the new iPhone

I had the opportunity to turn the white and black devices in my hands; I liked the black one a little more. Although there is a little more positive in white (but in general this is all very subjective).

Comparison of Nokia C6-01 and Nokia C7-00

In comparison, Nokia C6-01, in my picky opinion, looks more interesting from all sides. It's funny that even the visually large thickness (the difference, damn it, is only three millimeters, but it is clearly visible) and some kind of plump appearance only gives the younger model sympathy in my eyes.

Camera Nokia C6-01 and Nokia C7-00

The camera interface of both phones is identical and does not differ in anything (except the resolution) from the camera interface of the Nokia N8. I repeat, the idea of depriving the 8-megapixel camera in mid-class smartphones of autofocus seems unbalanced. The decision is purely marketing, to make the difference with the flagship model even greater. But, apart from the complete inaccessibility of the macro mode (according to the specifications, the camera’s fixed focus works at a distance of 50 centimeters, in reality from 20-30), the camera demonstrates quite decent results. No, it certainly doesn’t have enough stars in the sky, but on average, good results can be expected from it. You can see more examples of photographs and download them in original resolution in a separate photo gallery on Torba.

Interface

To be honest, there is nothing to tell here at all - all the features of the new Symbian^3 have already been discussed in detail in the Nokia N8 review. That is, all those three desktops, custom widgets (which are not enough, and which are too small to be convenient). There is a USB host function, but to connect USB flash drives to the phone, you need to buy a special adapter. There is QuickOffice with the ability not only to view, but also to edit documents. The Nokia C7-00 even has the same photo and video editor that impressed me as the Nokia N8. Nokia C6-01 no longer has them (features of the younger model). Among the advantages, it is worth recalling the convenient application for working with by email. About OVI cards (by the way, already available), which should be updated and installed fresh after purchasing the device. Maps work quickly because they are stored on a memory card and do not require downloading from the Internet, as is the case with Yandex or Google maps. In the new version they have multi-touch. Speaking about the advantages, it is worth remembering the key disadvantages of the system. These include the already well-worn problem of switching keyboard layouts. This can be solved by installing a separate resident application or the Swype application, which has already become available for Symbian, which simplifies text entry using touch screens. I am also constantly irritated by the fact that the phone constantly asks me to select an Internet access point (this looks especially cynical when there is only one access point, all the others have been deleted as unnecessary). What makes the problem especially strange is that in the settings the automatic connection to known WLAN networks and mobile operator. But the downside of this problem is a noticeably longer time battery life compared to any Android device. Symbian has implemented much better power consumption optimization so far.

Bottom line

From the bottom side Nokia models C6-01 and Nokia C7-00 are lightweight versions of Nokia N8. On the other hand, at a significantly lower price, they have their own individuality. Having inherited all the advantages and disadvantages of Symbian^3, they can offer the user an excellent sensitive capacitive display with a resolution of 640x360 and a good 8-megapixel camera. Nokia C7-00 is more different capacious battery and a built-in 8 GB disk. At the same time, if we take into account Nokia price C6-01, which today is at the level of 3000 hryvnia, it represents quite bargain purchase, especially if you don't care about the listed disadvantages of Symbian. For what (together with the charismatic appearance) Nokia C6-01 receives the editorial "we recommend" award.

Nokia C6-01 main menu

But the main thing is that it all works very quickly, smoothly and beautifully, and at the same time the interface is not overloaded with animation. Applications running in the background practically do not reduce performance: Symbian still remains one of the best OS in terms of the efficiency of the multitasking mechanism.

Many buyers have a lack of confidence in modern phones Symbian^3 due to the fact that they specifications much inferior to android phones. Like, the latter already have gigahertz processors with “cool” names like “Snapdragon” and random access memory over 512 MB, and here is just some ARM11 with clock frequency 680 MHz and 256 MB RAM. In fact, Symbian^3 is an extremely resource-intensive OS. If only because it does not use “layers” like a Java machine to run applications. And to run, for example, the same games on these platforms, completely different processor powers and memory sizes are required.

Ovi services

Nokia is trying to keep up with its competitors and is therefore intensively promoting Ovi services. Under this name, Ovi Maps (formerly called Nokia Maps), the Ovi Store application store, the Ovi Suite PC application (a replacement for PC Suite), and some others are combined. It's been about a year since Ovi Maps became free - and this is definitely a welcome moment for all those who plan to use their phone as a GPS navigator. And recently, an unusual campaign was even launched - users were asked to record their voices for navigator tips. Ovi Maps quite accurate (NAVTEQ is the supplier of map data), functional and able to compete with paid solutions.

The Ovi Store is an attempt to displace Android Market and Apple Store. However, the latter still remains the most convenient store and example to follow. However, the Ovi Store also has something to offer the consumer, although some annoying shortcomings have not yet been resolved. Firstly, you cannot download applications from your computer, as is implemented in Apple's iTunes. You can install programs from the Ovi Store only through the store application on the phone itself, so for this it is advisable to have a point at hand Wi-Fi access or be connected via tariff plan with unlimited mobile internet. Secondly, the price of many applications is still too high. Whereas in the Apple Store even good popular programs and games cost 99 cents (and seasonal discounts, sales or temporary freebies are common), it’s difficult to find anything worthwhile in the Ovi Store for less than 120 rubles. Although, fortunately, all kinds of free lite versions have finally appeared.
