DIY New Year's toy star made of cardboard. How to make a star on a Christmas tree with your own hands: step-by-step instructions and master classes

New Year- this is everyone’s favorite holiday, for which we need to prepare in advance. So we decided to learn how to make New Year's toys with our own hands. Today we will make an octagonal star out of paper, it can be hung on a Christmas tree, on a chandelier, in a doorway or just on the wall. It can be made from shiny paper, and after production it can be decorated with glitter (sparkles). You can make a tail for it from beads and beads. We will show you the basics, and you can further show your creative inclinations on your own.

So, watch the master class on making a Christmas tree toy “Star”.

To make one octagonal star you will need:

  1. Two identical sheets of square decorative paper
  2. Scissors
  3. Pencil and ruler

Fold the sheet in half with the right side facing in, and then in half again. Pinch the edges, then unfold it.

Now fold the paper diagonally, this time with the right side facing out.

Unfold and fold along the other diagonal. Expand.

You should end up with a leaf shape like this.

On the reverse side of the sheet, mark the middle of each crumpled section (not diagonal).

Now cut the paper to the designated location.

Fold the paper diagonally so that you end up with a four-pointed star.

Now apply glue to one of the sides folded in the previous step.

Glue all sides of the four-pointed star and overlap one of the triangles over the other.

You now have a three-dimensional four-pointed star.

Using the same principle, make a second four-pointed star.

Now you need to align the two stars with their inner sides so that their rays are diagonal to each other.

The result was an eight-pointed star. Now you can thread a thread through one of its ends and hang it on the tree. You can decorate the star with glitter, glue rhinestones, or spray it with silver spray paint.

So a separate page has appeared in our online store for Christmas tree toppers made in the shape of a star. The stars on the Christmas tree are different: five-pointed - “Kremlin” and Christmas “Bethlehem” - eight- and fourteen-pointed, which symbolize the only one in the light of which the Magi found the baby Christ.

Our online store offers Christmas tree star toppers of both types. A lot of people want to buy a Star for a Christmas tree for themselves and their loved ones.
Do you know how it all started? I can tell you.

Many years ago, in one small town with the sonorous name Vysokovsk, there lived one Girl. She was a small, pretty, big-eyed Girl, like there are many in all the cities of our huge country. And she had a Grandmother. Grandmother was a Sorceress and worked at a factory that produced Joy... It was one of the leading factories in our country in this area. And then one day, Grandmother gave her beloved Granddaughter an amazing thing made with her own hands - a glass Christmas tree topper made in the shape of an eight-pointed star and assembled with shiny glass beads using thin wire. The girl fell in love with her Star very much and since then every year the Star decorated the New Year tree in their house, giving everyone joy and love, since she was a Real Magic Thing!

Many years have passed since then and the little Girl grew up into a blue-eyed beauty, studied and went to work at her grandmother’s factory. And many more years passed, and Grandmother was no longer there. And the Star continued to give everyone warmth and joy. But then one day something happened that happens to all our beloved and frequently used things. It's broken! The thin wires frayed and the beautiful Star turned into a pile of shiny glass beads... And the Granddaughter took this bunch of beads and brought it to her factory. The Council of Elder Sorceresses met, they conjured for a long time, but the Star was saved. And at the same time they invested so much Love and Goodness into it that they felt sorry to part with the Star. Why is there such a wonderful Star in only one house?! They conjured some more magic, and twin sisters appeared at the Star, and then other Stars appeared. And there were more and more of them, so that there was enough for everyone!

One day before the New Year, my daughter went to GUM and saw the Stars there in all the splendor of their magical radiance! And she told me about them. And I, in turn, bought them for our online store and shared them with all site visitors. And I gave my daughter one of these Stars for her birthday. Let us also have a Real Magic Star!

(This is the true story of the creation of the glass Christmas tree Star.)

Of course, it is impossible to imagine the approaching New Year and Christmas holidays without a decorated Christmas tree! Well, what would a Christmas tree be without a beautiful star on the top? Of course, you can crown your Christmas tree with a beautiful spire. However, the star - the Bethlehem Christmas or “Soviet”, red five-pointed star - traditionally remains the most popular decoration.
In our review we will talk about how you can make a star yourself to decorate your Christmas tree. In this case, you can use both the most common materials: cardboard, paper, glue, glitter, and unexpected ones - for example, old books or twigs brought from the forest.

The most common version of a homemade star is a three-dimensional five-pointed star made of cardboard. To cut the base, you can use one of the templates:

The color of the star can be different - silver, gold, red...

And another option for making something like this New Year's star to the Christmas tree. Here, two identical five-pointed stars are bent to create volume, crumpled paper is placed inside, as well as a wire spiral (for strengthening at the top). The halves are glued together with tape, and the top of the star is treated with glue, glitter, and tinsel.

And here is another option for patterning a star, not from two halves, but with separate rays:

Or decorate it in a “forest style”. Thin dry twigs cut with pruning shears are carefully glued to the surface of the cardboard star, the gaps are filled with small pieces of them.

Eight-pointed stars are also popular, especially as decorations for Christmas.
Here is a paper star that is easy to make, but requires patience and precision. Squares of 4 sizes (8 squares of each size) need to be folded as in the picture, and then glued.

The New Year is approaching and the bulk of the time in the last days of the outgoing year is spent preparing for the holiday. To decorate the main symbol - the Christmas tree - we use many different decorations. Some people prefer Christmas balls, others take out old Soviet toys from the mezzanine, and still others prefer to make decorations with their own hands. Let's figure out how to make a star for the Christmas tree yourself and save your holiday budget this year.

Paper toys are simple and inexpensive

Both children and adults love to craft with paper. Try decorating the Christmas tree on one of the long winter evenings with your child. There are so many variations of paper stars for the Christmas tree that it’s impossible to list them all. Do you think that paper toys will look too simple - not at all. Just look at what beautiful crafts can be made from this material.

To make a star, use double-sided paper of your favorite color. Fold it like an accordion. To ensure that the pieces are even, we recommend that you first fold the sheet in half, then unfold it and fold each half in half again. Unfold again and repeat the steps with a quarter of the sheet, i.e. a quarter of the sheet must be folded in half again. You will get fold lines along which it is easy to fold an even accordion.

Fold the accordion in half, this is done to mark the middle line. Unfold this fold. Cut a piece of paper diagonally from the outer bottom corner to the middle, but not reaching there.

Fold the accordion in half and cut exactly the same piece of paper from the other half along the cut line. In principle, you can cut off the excess right away, but since the paper here is several folds, this will be difficult to do.

Tie the workpiece in the middle with what you will later attach it to the tree.

Expand the star. There will be extra gaps on both sides between the rays of the star; glue these areas together with tape.

Straighten the star and secure it to the top of the tree.

If you prefer five-pointed stars in the style of the Soviet era, then they are easily made from thick paper or cardboard - regular, for children's creativity, or decorative, which is used in scrapbooking.

Proceed according to the following instructions.

Here's another variation on this theme made from cardboard with perforations.

If the previous options are best attached to the top of the tree, then a star made according to the following master class will decorate the branches. It looks more like a fluffy needle ball, and you can’t immediately tell that it’s made from paper, it looks so professional.

Cut out 10 round blanks. To outline, you can use a round object or a compass.

Fold the circle in half. Then again in half and again. Lay out the figure.

Draw a small circle in the center about 2 cm in diameter and make cuts along the folds to the inner circle.

Lubricate the tip of each petal with glue and, using a sharpened pencil as a shape, roll each petal into a cone.

After smearing the petals with glue, you can sprinkle them with glitter, further decorating them.

Now let's assemble the star. Make a hole in the center of each piece with an awl.

Place a small sequin on the cord. Insert two threads into a thick needle at once.

String the first piece so that the wrong side faces up. We string the rest in reverse. We secure the last detail with sequins. By pulling two threads in different directions, form a star.

They also make stars out of paper using the origami technique. This may seem difficult at first glance. But if you follow the instructions carefully, it turns out that the process is not so much complicated as it is painstaking. The easiest way is to make a star from individual modules, which are then nested one inside the other.

To make it you will need 6 squares of paper of different colors 9 by 9 cm.

All modules fold the same way. Fold the sheet diagonally. Unfold 90 degrees clockwise and fold diagonally again.

Turn 90 degrees clockwise, turn over and fold in half like a book.

Unfold, push the paper from the sides and it will fit into the folds. You will get a double triangle.

This is what it looks like from the back.

And so - from above. Make 6 of these parts.

Let's start assembling. Each module has two corners on each side. Take the red module and the yellow one.

Insert the two corners of the yellow module into the two pockets of the red module.

Insert all the way.

Fold in half. Turn back. You will get a fold.

Now at this point the paper opens up.

Fold it in the same way as in the photo.

Take new module red and insert into the pockets of the yellow module. Push it all the way in again.

Make a fold. Open and bend.

Attach the modules further in order, alternating the red and yellow modules.

At the end, close the figure. Don't forget to make a fold. Straighten it out. All that remains is to thread the thread. Make a loop and slip it into your pocket. Glue it so that the thread does not fly out.

Here are also instructions for making small stars, with which you can decorate a miniature forest beauty.

We make notes on a two-centimeter piece of paper.

Draw lines along the marks to make even stripes. And cut off the strips.

Take one piece of paper. Fold the edges into a loop: the left edge under the right. There should be little left edge.

We insert the left edge into the loop and align.

We tuck the small tail up.

We lower the top ribbon down and to the left. Lay it out exactly along the edge.

We turn the figure over and turn it so that the long piece of tape is on top. Bend down and to the right. We turn it over again, bend it down and to the left, turn it over - down and to the right, then turn it over again - down and to the left.

We hide the remaining piece in the resulting pocket.

Use your fingernail to push the star from the sides and it will become voluminous.

Made of fabric: a star on the top of the tree and pendants made of scraps

Toys made of fabric look a little unusual for us. But how great they will look on the Christmas tree. For example, this eight-pointed star can be tied to the top of your head. It is not done in 5 minutes, but for the sake of such beauty you can spend some time.

To sew a lace star of Bethlehem on a Christmas tree you will need a pattern. You can build it yourself, but we recommend using a ready-made one, just enlarge the image to the desired size. In the original, the size of the finished star was 24 cm.

Source materials:
  • two types of fabric similar in tone, but different in texture, however, it’s up to your taste;
  • fabric for the back of the toy. This can be a piece of the material that is already used for the front side, if you happen to have extra.
  • ribbons with which the star will be attached to the top of the spruce;
  • for decoration, use whatever you want: sequins, buttons, rhinestones, beads, seed beads. Lace looks especially good.

Cut out eight “petals” of the star for the front side and the back side from two halves.

Fold the pieces and stitch where you see the red lines.

Press the seams well.

Place the resulting pieces together two at a time and sew them together again.

Now you have two front parts that need to be smoothed out.

Just sew them together with one center seam.

Smooth the part completely.

On the reverse side, sew a ribbon 50-60 cm long and a loop 10 cm long.

Sew both halves together and use scissors to make cuts where marked in green.

Stuff the toy and sew it up.

Decorate as you wish or as shown in the photo. The central bead is sewn through, while at the same time a button is attached to the reverse side.

Now see what results you can get. Such handicrafts can also be given as a gift.

And if you make several small toys, you can make pendants out of them.

A six-pointed star is sewn in a similar way.

Speaking of pendants. Original variations on the theme of the Christmas eight-pointed star are made from scraps. These stars are unusual, but they are also hung on the Christmas tree.

They themselves are round, but the pattern created from scraps of different colors forms a star. This decoration looks very elegant on the Christmas tree. Moreover, the color of the toy is predominantly red, New Year’s.

First of all, prepare the material. You can purchase it specifically at craft stores, but it is much more practical to use old shirts, blouses, bed linen for this purpose - anything as long as the colors match well with each other. In total, you will need 40 parts with sides 5 by 4.5 cm. From this number of elements of the specified size, you will get a decoration with a diameter of approximately 10 cm.

Bend the long side of each piece inward about 1 cm and iron it.

Now lay out several pieces face up and draw a line in the center. Do this with all the details.

We cut out the backing square and draw it as in the photo: two diagonals and a cross passing through the middle of the sides.

Place the first piece so that the top edge and the center line coincide with the lines on the backing.

Move the second part down a little.

Place three more parts in exactly the same way.

Sew all the parts with a back stitch. Be sure to ensure that the edges of the parts are sewn, the stitch should be exactly at the beginning of the part.

Sew seven more rows in the same way. The center lines on the parts match the lines on the backing.

Fold the right piece first.

Then lower it.

Fold it again, but upward.

Do the same with the left part.

Then everything is simpler. It will only be necessary to fold the part first in the form of a triangle.

Then lay it down. We no longer bend anything upward. This is done only with the first part in the row.

We repeat similar actions with all the scraps along all rows.

As a result, this is the ornament we get. Pin the front piece to the backing and cut out.

Sweep and, stepping back from the edge about 1 cm, draw a line in a circle.

Cut along the front side back and a circle of padding polyester for the inner layer. We also draw a line on the back, stepping back 1 cm from the edge.

We take store-bought bias tape or from the material from which the toy was made, and cut out a strip along the bias.

Carefully sew the decoration around. We process the edges.

Don't forget to sew on the ribbon.

Openwork and original thread decorations

Maybe you have a small skein of thread left from knitting and you don’t know what to do with it to benefit your business? Try making airy, graceful, charming stars on a wire frame.

To make such a cute fluffy star pendant you will need very few materials.

Prepare the wire.

Bend the wire so that 5 rays are formed.

Cut the wire, leaving a small margin.

Take fluffy yarn.

Lubricate the frame with glue in the place where you will begin to wrap the star.

Carefully wrap the thread around the entire frame.

Then fill in the gaps in a chaotic manner, as shown in the photo.

That's all. It will only take a few minutes to make the pendant, and you can decorate the entire Christmas tree with these toys, without even needing anything else.

What do you think of the next master class, which shows how to make a star from cardboard and twine? The original decorations are painted with acrylic paint.

Make a template from cardboard. Draw an outline. You will need two identical parts.

Cut out the frame of the future star from cardboard.

Grease one half of the frame with PVA glue.

A small star, which comes from the middle of a large star, can also be wrapped with thread.

Glue two layers of frame for the small and large star.

Coat the outside of the cardboard with PVA glue and begin wrapping it with twine. Secure the edge of the twine with glue.

The star can be painted using acrylic paints and a sponge.

All that remains is to tie the thread.

An openwork star that looks like a real work of art can be created if you make a frame from matches to stretch the threads. Soak the thread itself in PVA glue, and then begin to wrap the frame: first along the contour, then in the middle, creating a fantasy pattern. Let the star dry and remove from the matches. Thanks to PVA glue, the toy will keep its shape.

Watch the video for making a star using this scheme; it will be simpler, but the technology is similar.

Products made from beads and seed beads

To make stars for the Christmas tree, beads and beads are also used. They are incredibly beautiful and graceful. You will need wire, beads, beads, wire cutters and a lot of patience if you want to make something more complicated than the photo above.

Video: star made of yellow beads

The option with several rows looks more interesting, but not everyone can make such a star.

Video: how to make a snowflake

Small glass bead pendants can also serve as Christmas tree decorations. We offer one of the manufacturing schemes.

Do you want a simpler, but very decorative option? Make a frame from thick wire, and collect many multi-colored beads on a long piece of thin wire for weaving. Then wrap the frame with wire and beads. This is what you should get.

Crafts from newspaper tubes

An interesting direction of needlework is weaving from newspaper tubes. The preparations are very easy to make. You need to cut the newspaper sheet lengthwise into strips approximately 7-8 cm wide, then twist them diagonally, using a knitting needle, wooden skewer or something similar at the beginning for the template. These tubes are used to make decorative crafts, souvenirs, doll furniture, flower pots and, of course, stars for the Christmas tree. It is quite difficult to present clear instructions in a photo, so we suggest that you familiarize yourself with the master class in video format.

Video: weaving a star from newspaper tubes

Decorate the resulting star with bows, rhinestones, and paint.

Stars are made not only from the listed materials, but also from ordinary thin twigs.

Get creative and make original decorations for your Christmas tree. Good luck with your creativity!
