Mozilla full version. Installing an older version of Firefox

Often times, if there is a problem after updating Firefox, people are looking for a way to revert to a previous version. This usually does not solve the problem and makes your computer and information vulnerable to attacks. This article provides some alternatives to downgrade and links to older versions. Firefox versions if you decide to return to them.

Installing a previous version doesn't fix most problems

Upgrade issues are usually not caused by new version Firefox, but rather the update process itself. In most cases, installing a previous version will not solve the problem. Instead of rolling back to previous version, read the articles:

  • What to do when an update failed message appears when updating Firefox
  • Unable to connect to websites after updating Firefox

Note: Other problems can be solved by using Firefox's cleanup feature. This resets Firefox settings to the default settings, while retaining important information for you.

Make sure that the security system and related software completely renovated. Some protection programs need to be updated before latest version for every Firefox update.

Additional software bundled with security software must also be updated. Such software may not affect your security, but if it is outdated, it may interfere with the normal use of Firefox, or cause errors in Firefox.

I still want to install the previous version, where can I find it?

Although Mozilla has a website containing older versions of Firefox for testing purposes, we do not recommend that you use anything other than the latest version.

A warning: Using older versions of Firefox carries a significant security risk.

Default, different versions Firefox will use the same user profile information. Installation over old version Firefox, after using Firefox version 55 or higher, may cause problems such as error messages, breakdowns in parts of Firefox, and problems with some websites. You must either create a new profile or update Firefox after installing the old version.

Important: By default, Firefox is set to update automatically. To prevent automatic update Firefox after you have installed the old version, you need to change the settings of your Firefox: Click on the menu button and select SettingsSettings. On the General panel, go to the section Firefox updates. (For Firefox version 55 and below, you must go to the panel Additional and select the Updates tab.)Go to the Advanced panel and select the Updates tab (for more information, read

From version Mozilla Firefox 57, thousands of extensions will stop working in the browser, browser users will see many other changes in the operation of the Internet browser.

A turning point in browser history begins. What awaits Firefox: a breakthrough into the future, or a gradual oblivion?

Quite a few users in the world use Mozilla browser Firefox as the primary web browser on the Internet. It is essentially the only independent browser that more or less successfully resists the monopoly. Google chrome on the market of browsers in the Windows operating system.

I do not mention Microsoft Edge browsers and Internet Explorer as they are installed by default on Windows. Users install all other browsers on their own computers.

Things are even worse with other browsers: Opera browser has a small market share in the world, Yandex Browser is just a regional browser, and both are based on Chrome. I do not take into account mobile browsers because they are somewhat different browsers in terms of their functionality.

Of course, it is very difficult to compete with a giant corporation with huge advertising opportunities. Google owns the largest search engine, several of the most visited sites in the world, for example, just name one - YouTube.

Nevertheless, to date, Mozilla Firefox retains its position as the second most important browser. In early 2017, the Mozilla Foundation made a decision to make major changes to the browser.

What's new in Firefox 57 and later

The browser is gradually migrating from the old Gecko engine to the new Quantum engine. Thanks to this, resource consumption is optimized, the browser works faster and more stable. Mogoprocessing is implemented in the browser, which favorably affects the performance of the application.

In Mozilla Firefox 57, the interface will change: the Photon interface will appear, and some other changes will be made.

Firefox 57 will disable thousands of extensions

Many users know that Mozilla Firefox is the most customizable browser, thanks to the sheer number of extensions. Thanks to extensions, additional functionality appears in the browser.

Add-ons written using XUL, SDK, and XPCOM will no longer work in Firefox 57 Quantum. Only add-ons written on WebExtensions will work in the browser.

On this moment only 4 thousand extensions support WebExtensions out of more than 20 thousand add-ons in AMO (addons.mozilla.org). Outdated add-ons include the vast majority of the most popular. They are marked as "obsolete" in the browser, but they still work (until version 57 is released).

With the release of Firefox 57 (Firefox Quantum), everything will get much worse: all "outdated" extensions will be disabled in the browser.

The developers have been warned about this in advance so that they pass their extensions under WebExtensions. It would seem that redo it and everything will be fine. But there are some nuances here. Here is some of them:

  • some of the old add-ons have been abandoned, the developers have stopped their development. That being said, these extensions continue to work great in the browser.
  • WebExtensions has limitations in terms of functionality. You may know that the extensions of the same name in Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome browsers work differently. Usually, an extension in Firefox is more functional, due to the fact that it does not have the restrictions of WebExtensions, which is used in Chrome.
  • a significant part of the developers fundamentally refused to port their extensions to WebExtensions, because of this attitude on the part of Mozilla
  • most of the multifunctional extensions cannot be migrated to WebExtensions due to functional limitations

An illustrative example is with an extension used by hundreds of thousands of users. The extension has the highest rating - 5 stars. It is mainly used by browser users with years of experience, as newbies have no idea what the browser looked like until 2013 when it switched to Australis interface (the extension customizes the classic Mozilla Firefox interface).

The developer turned to Bugzilla to get an API for translating his add-on to WebExtensions (in this case, the extension would have significantly lost its functionality), he was refused. This means that the Classic Theme Restorer extension will "die" at the end of 2017. The extension will only work in outdated browser versions.

The developer Cyberfox (based on Firefox) also announced the "death" of this version of the browser. There will be no new browser versions, Cyberfox switched to Mozilla Firefox ESR (long-term support version) and will work for another year.

When deciding on drastic changes, Mozilla proceeds from the following logic:

  • thanks to technical innovations, Mozilla Firefox will be able to successfully withstand Google Chrome
  • with the introduction of WebExtensions, most extensions from the Chrome store will be available to Firefox users
  • The WebExtensions API for Firefox allows you to develop more functional extensions than WebExtensions for Chrome
  • a significant part of users do not use extensions at all, which means that they will continue to use the browser without any problems

Whether this decision will lead Mozilla to success, or the inevitable crash of the browser over time, time will tell.

Where to see add-ons with a shortcut compatible with Firefox 57

Extensions written in WebExtensions are now labeled "Compatible with Firefox 57+" in the Mozilla App Store (AMO). AMOs will show compatible extensions at the top of the add-ons list. The ability to download old extensions will remain only for users of older versions of the browser, released before version 57.

Separately, add-ons supported in Mozilla Firefox 57+ can be viewed on this page.

How to prepare for the release of Mozilla Firefox 57 version

On my computer, I use Mozilla Firefox as my primary browser. There are quite a few extensions installed in my browser: a small part of them are always enabled, the rest I use from time to time, some more often, others less often.

Almost all the extensions I need are not supported in Firefox 57.

What to do for those who are used to using Firefox extensions that will disable in the browser starting with version 57?

There are very few options:

  • switch to another browser (before switching, do not forget to save your bookmarks in order to transfer them to another browser)
  • disable browser refresh while continuing to use a specific version that is compatible with old extensions

If you need advanced functionality, then there are practically no options. You will have to switch to Google Chrome, or to another browser based on it, and then use the Chrome extensions.

There is still a browser based on Mozilla Firefox, but this is an old Firefox fork. There is an option using Mozilla Firefox ESR - a version of the browser with long-term support. In this case, you can safely use the browser for another year and a half.

Developer Waterfox (another Firefox-based browser) promises to bring support for legacy XUL / XPCOM extensions to Waterfox 57+, and it's unclear whether this will work or not.

I stayed on the latest version of the browser that supports the old extensions. Now I will tell you how, in my opinion, you should prepare for the release of version 57.

  1. The first thing to do: save your browser profile with all settings in order not to lose add-ons and other important data. You can save the profile using the program, or manually (link to this way(see the article below).
  2. Next, you need to enter Mozilla settings Firefox and disable automatic browser refresh in order to continue using current version browser.
  3. In order to keep abreast of the changes in new versions of Firefox, I recommend using the portable version of the Firefox Portable browser. Copy your backup profile that you saved earlier to your portable browser. On a portable browser, you will have the same settings as the main browser. After some tweaking, you can run both browsers isolated from each other. Firefox Portable will have automatic updates enabled, so you will be able to observe all changes occurring in the browser, including those related to the work of extensions.

After a while, it will be possible to draw conclusions: perhaps the add-ons you need, compatible with WebExtensions, will appear in Mozilla Firefox, then update the browser to current version... If everything is sad, you will have to either use Firefox without the usual extensions, or switch to another browser.

If the work of some extensions is not necessary for you on a permanent basis, transfer (copy) your profile to Firefox browser Portable to version 57, in which you disable the update. In this case, you can use the required extensions at any time.

How to restore old settings after upgrading to Mozilla Firefox Quantum

As I assumed, for many users of the Firefox browser, the upgrade to version 57 came as a surprise. This is normal, not everyone is closely following the releases of new browser releases.

How do I return old extensions to the browser? Everything can be returned to the state that the browser had before the update. I will show you two ways: a simpler one and a more complex one.

An easy way to restore the old Firefox browser settings

To return the profile settings of the Mozilla Firefox browser, follow these steps:

  1. Remove the browser from your computer Windows tool... Usually, removal by a system tool does not affect the browser profile, which contains all the settings, including, installed extensions... The main thing is that when deleting system tool did not delete anything from the browser profile (because of this, this method is less reliable).
  2. Download any version of Firefox up to release 57 by following this link: https://mozilla-russia.org/products/firefox/history.html
  3. Install the browser on your computer. Immediately after launching the browser, go to the settings, disable the update.
  4. Restart your browser. The old version will pick up all the settings from the profile. All extensions will work again.

The second way to return the previous Mozilla Firefox settings

This method is more complicated, but reliable. Follow these steps in sequence:

  1. Manually copy the browser profile folder to a convenient location on your computer for this article (there is a video in the article):. The Mozilla profile is in hidden folder, in the computer user profile.
  2. Uninstall Firefox Quantum from your computer. The browser can be removed using the uninstaller program, which will remove the browser profile.
  3. Download to your computer any version of Firefox up to release 57 (using the link in the method above).
  4. Immediately after starting the old version of the browser, disable the update, and then close the browser.
  5. Enter the profile folder installed browser, copy the content from the previously copied profile folder of the 57 version of the browser into it. When copying, agree to replace the files.
  6. Launch Mozilla Firefox browser. All previous extensions and other customizations will be in place.

A large number of extensions that are incompatible with WebExtensions are disabled in the Mozilla Firefox 57 browser. Because of this, the future of Firefox is shrouded in darkness: the browser is waiting for a breakthrough or a fiasco.
