For several years now, I have been closely following the development of the audio component of modern devices. Today, Apple company started to refuse 3.5 mm. connectors followed suit, and many Chinese manufacturers took this step. Moreover, latest models Hi-Fi players also began to support wireless interfaces. It's true, we live in a time when wires are becoming a thing of the past. And even the most seasoned supporters of connectors will agree that there are many situations in which wires frankly get in the way, and ultra-high sound quality fades into the background, giving way to convenience. Exercising, listening to music public transport, and simply, if you have warm clothes in winter, wireless sound definitely wins here. As you probably already guessed, today we will talk about a new wireless headset from Denmark - Jabra Halo Smart.

UNPACKING AND EQUIPMENT

The packaging of the Jabra Halo Smart is sophisticated and stylish. On the front there is a large photo in which we see the headset “in action”, so we can immediately understand whether this model is suitable for us or is it worth looking in the direction of a different form factor. It also states that the headset is suitable for calls and music and produces amazing sound. Yes, there are no “Chinese promises” like Hi-Fi or Lossless. Modest and very correct - “Amazing Sound”. I noticed this immediately and consider such a move worthy of respect.

On the back and sides there is information about the main characteristics of the device and a smartphone application that expands the functionality of the device.

The box opens like a book. I’m sure that Jabra employees put a lot of thought into the design of the box, but I personally didn’t immediately understand how to remove the headphones from the packaging. I think a simple “open here” tag would have made the first impression of the product much more complete. In my case, the box was slightly damaged when I tried to remove the headset.

The kit included a nice fabric carrying case, made in branded black and yellow colors, a MicroUSB charging cable, a package of documentation, including in the correct Russian language, a warranty card and three pairs of additional ear pads, completely different from those already included on the device .

The additional attachments are very good, but they turned out to be small for my ears, so I will note another advantage of the headset - the versatility of the ear pads. My attachments for Sony headphones and Vsonic fit perfectly, so, regardless of the characteristics of your ear canal, you can always find suitable ear pads.

DESIGN/ERGONOMICS

The Jabra Halo Smart wireless headset is made entirely of plastic and consists of an anatomically shaped neck arch, noodle wire and the cups themselves.

On the back of the arc there is a manufacturer's logo, on the bottom there is service information and a hermetically sealed MiroUSB slot for charging the device.

One of the features of the Jabra Halo Smart is the flexible neckband, which allows you to comfortably adjust the headset to almost any neck. Frankly speaking, I have a rather massive neck and I was a little worried about this, but as it turned out, it was in vain. The arch fits perfectly, and due to its flexibility and memory effect, it is securely fixed on the neck even when playing active sports.

At first glance, the very presence of the arc seems unjustified, but there is one thing. In the design of the arc itself there is a very capacious battery at 230mAh, which allows you to talk for 17 hours or enjoy music for about 15. In standby mode, the headset can generally work for 22 days and this is really very important. During testing, I often frankly forgot to turn off the headset and the next day, when getting ready to run errands, I automatically took it with me, not caring at all about charging. And in this mode, the Jabra Halo Smart worked for me for more than a week, and the battery was not yet discharged, simply for fear of an unplanned end of charge. And yes, the headset works for a really long time.

The second thing I was able to check was the presence of IP54 protection. The neck part of the headset was successfully immersed in water, the headset itself was used in the rain and despite all this, it still works amazingly.

On the right side of the arc there are three rubberized buttons with a sharp, pleasant click: volume up (next track), volume down (previous track) and a call answer button (play/pause).

On the left side there is a single button responsible for calling the assistant; for iOS this is Siri, for Android - Google Now. I'm sure there will be business people who will appreciate the ability to search the network “on the go” and issue commands to the system.

Next to the button is a microphone with wind and water protection. Everything said in the characteristics is true - talking in a strong wind is almost as easy as in complete calm. The conversation quality is slightly lower than that of music, but for telephone conversations quite sufficient.

On the back of the arc there is an LED indicator that takes on three colors: red (off), blue (search for a smartphone) and green (on). To turn the device on or off, you need to hold down the answer button, after which you can feel vibration in the neck arch and hear a message in English about the status of the connection to the smartphone. The vibration is more like jolting - a very pleasant tactile addition to the audio functionality.

Another surprise from Jabra is the presence of two pairs of magnets for attaching the cups. The first pair is hidden in the arc and allows you to fasten the cups to it, the second pair allows you to fasten the cups to each other, forming some kind of chain.

This is, in my opinion, the most convenient way to attach the cups when the headset is not in use. In addition, the process of fastening and unfastening itself works as an answer to a call and a call reset, depending on the situation. How convenient is this? After the conversation, just connect the cups with magnets and be sure that the reset will happen. This can be very useful in the case of curious people who, after the call, continue to persistently listen to something.

The cups also have an anatomical shape and fit comfortably inside the ear, while the sound insulation is excellent.

On the front part you can see two compensation holes; the sound guides are covered with a metal mesh. Driver diameter - 10 mm.

INTERFACE

To expand the functionality of the headset, Jabra has released additional software, consisting of a service part Jabra Service and an interface part - Jabra Assist.

The point of this application is to add the ability to read messages and letters directly while using the headset. Default is voice engine Pico TTS, but it does not support Russian language, so I installed it on mine Android smartphone Google Speech Synthesizer app.

SOUND

Speaking about the sound of Jabra Halo Smart, it is necessary to immediately clarify the absence of the Apt-X codec, for the so-called Lossless Bluetooth. Testing was carried out on Meizu smartphone MX4 Pro with top-end SABER ES9018K2M DAC and TI OPA1612 professional amplifier. In my case, when Bluetooth connection the signal was processed by the AAC codec - this is a completely universal codec with a quality superior to the now popular MP3, however, I consider it unnecessary to download Flac and APE for listening on the Jabra Halo Smart.

Subbass is deep, contoured, leaving the main rhythmic position for the bass. The bass is a little raised, but it is done truly exquisitely - there is just enough of it as needed. I am sure that all lovers of proper bass will be satisfied with it. Mids and highs are in their place. Detailing, for bluetooth headsets with AAC codec - good quality. I would rate the overall sound quality of the Jabra Halo Smart as very good.

CONCLUSIONS

Drawing conclusions, we must pay tribute to Jabra, they really managed to do something completely unique: a vibration motor, control via an assistant, reading messages in any language, and all this is secured by excellent operating time and good sound quality. To sum it up briefly, I didn’t even have any doubts whether I would keep the headset for myself - definitely yes!

Thank you all for your attention! The headset can be purchased from the company's partners:

I love wireless headphones; living without wires is comfortable. Sound fans will say that high-quality music can only be done over a wire, and Bluetooth is evil. I have no doubt, but I’m not a fan of crystal clear sound and I’m not looking for ideals, I just use what’s convenient. Judging by how often people with different Bluetooth headphones have begun to meet, I’m not the only one who thinks in this way.

Another hero from the world of wireless music is Jabro Halo Smart. The headphones last a long time, play music well, and the price tag won’t break your budget. In general, a remarkable thing.

Choose attachments

The headphones are loud, but it depends on what you listen to. For example, the volume on the OnePlus 3 is lower than on the iPhone 7, perhaps this depends on the power of the amplifier. I encountered a similar feature on other headsets. Noise insulation is good; when music is playing, the sound of the subway is not annoying, the hum does not drown out the songs.

I didn’t like the included tips for the headphones; there are 3 pairs of different-sized silicone tips, but they are all small, the headphones kept falling out while moving. This is, of course, an individual question. But there are headphones that are suitable for everyone, and there are also those that require individual adjustment. In the case of the Jabra Halo Smart, tips from other headphones came to the rescue.

For Jabra Halo Smart, tips from headphones with a thick sound guide are suitable, for example, silicone tips from Ultimate Ears triple.fi 10 Pro fit perfectly. If you are not satisfied with the supplied attachments, I recommend custom ones. I can recommend the Comply Foam tips, excellent sound insulation and comfortable fit.

As soon as I changed the nozzles, replacing the foam ones with the silicone ones, even the sound changed and became more saturated. The headphones can be connected to two devices simultaneously. In the office I listen to music from an iPad or Mac, the phone is also connected, when a call comes in the music fades out, and after the call ends it resumes automatically, multipoint works well.

Zwook

As I already wrote, things didn’t work out for me with the supplied attachments; I initially formed a negative opinion about the sound: flat, almost without bass and pressure.

Then I changed them to others, they revealed the potential of the Jabra Halo Smart. There was a pickup on low frequencies, the highs are a little lacking, but the sound does not hurt the ears. The sound is deep, there is a sense of stage and some volume, instrumental compositions play perfectly, percussion instruments are clearly audible.

For harsh “metal”, the driver speed is no longer enough, the sound is blurred. But this is generally a difficult task for dynamic headphones; it requires “reinforcement”.

Pop sounds great on Jabra, as does electronics, the bass is not pumped up, but with the right attachments it is very pleasant.

In headset mode, everything is clearly audible, the interlocutor does not hear wind noise thanks to the microphone on the headband, background noise almost not. On the street, of course, you can hear extraneous sounds, but the quality of voice transmission is good, the interlocutors are happy. Out of curiosity, I tried to speak through the headset, hiding it under a down jacket, the quality did not deteriorate much. In winter, such things are important; you don’t want to unbutton your jacket in the cold to talk on the phone. In the case of Jabra, you won't have to freeze.

Control

The headset is turned on with the multifunction button, after which it is immediately ready for pairing. To pair with phones, you need to press and hold the central button on the right earpiece.

The volume keys, when pressed for a long time, switch tracks. When the headset is not connected to the phone, when you press the volume buttons, a voice indicator of the battery charge starts. Using the central key, we start a call to the last subscriber from the call log.

The button on the other side launches the voice assistant, I tried it with Android and iPhone, everything worked correctly. The commands are recognized perfectly, there are no errors, Siri understands everything. But you won’t be able to continue the conversation with the assistant using the key on the headset; a new session will start, and you’ll have to use the device itself.

Notifications

Jabra Halo Smart has a built-in vibration motor that triggers when notifications arrive on your phone. But you still have to take it out of your pocket to find out who wrote the message. Although some people buy smart bracelets in order not to miss notifications, for example, my friend walks with a Xiaomi Mi Band 2. Now, as an option, you can walk with a headset. It works with iOS and Android, even making a FaceTime call makes Halo vibrate.

Working hours

The manufacturer claims up to 17 hours of music listening, but I did not conduct such a test for continuous operation.

I charged the headset once a week, listening to music for 2 hours a day. I think that Jabra will “extend” the stated operating time, the autonomy is excellent. You can monitor the charge level from the phone screen, everything is clear.

Appearance

The headset hangs on your neck, these are not AirPods, you will never lose such headphones. Confused by the bright red wire? There are also options with blue and black. Jabra Halo Smart fits well on the neck and does not slip during activities, the flat wire does not stiffen in the cold, and nothing gets tangled.

All control buttons are located at the ends of the arms; if pressed with force, you won’t be able to accidentally switch the track. At first the buttons seemed inconvenient to me, but after use I can say that the controls are fine, switching tracks is quite comfortable. The only negative is that in winter the headband remains under the jacket, so you won’t be able to switch tracks outside.

Hanging a headband over a jacket is also not the best option, however, you can always switch from your phone, and many people generally listen to random or their own playlists, for such users this will not be critical.

On the right arm there are volume buttons and a multifunction key, on the left there is a microphone and a start key voice assistant. The charging socket is at the bottom at the back, so you have to remove the headphones from your neck to charge.

In my opinion, the microphone location is optimal, you can hear it normally, and no unnecessary noise is added to the conversation. The case is protected from wind and drops; if the rain takes you by surprise, nothing will happen to the headphones.

The headphones are magnetized and do not dangle while you walk. It’s very convenient when you take out the earphone to talk to someone along the way.

Opinion

In Moscow, Jabra Halo Smart costs 4,990 rubles, the headset is worth this money. Here good system notifications, practical multipoint, good sound(if you choose attachments, this is an important point), and it also works for a very long time. There are not many models on the market of a similar design with similar notification systems; the Jabra Halo Smart definitely deserves attention.

Jabra is not the first brand that comes to mind when it comes to wireless stereo headsets. Monophonic headsets “for work” are another matter; the company has long been one of the leaders in this market segment. But with wireless headphones allowing you to listen to music in good quality, Jabra (at least for me) was never associated.

Yes, seven years ago Jabra's first headset in the Halo line was released - on-ear Bluetooth headphones in a futuristic foldable design. Then there was Halo 2, and this year the line continued with the more traditional Halo Fusion in the “collar plus plugs” form factor that has been popular over the last few years. The Jabra Halo Smart headset is a continuation of this story, but with a different design, record autonomy, more high quality sound and several original engineering features.

Firstly, there is an interesting design - the black matte plastic of the neckband and headphone housings is combined with blue or red color accents of the “flat” wires and the same color inserts inside the rubber tips. And for those who prefer a more business style, there is an all-black model.

The only pity is that the plastic of the “collar” and the headphone housings is too utilitarian, “cheap” to the touch (at the ends of the “collar”, where the buttons are located, the plastic is more pleasant, soft-touch). The large gaps between the parts that make up the neck mount do not add a premium feel to the device with a recommended price of 5,990 rubles.

The weight of the headset - 38 grams - is not tiring, and you quickly stop noticing the device. But you notice when it starts to vibrate when incoming call- so you definitely won’t miss the call. There are flexible zones on both sides of the neck attachment that allow you to open the arc of the “collar” wider so that it does not rest on your neck, or, conversely, narrow it so that it fits more securely:

The developers also used magnets in an interesting way - they are built into both sides of the mounting arms and into the headphone housings. Accordingly, you can magnetize the “ears” to the mount so they don’t dangle, or connect both headphones to your chest. The magnets are strong enough to hold the connection while walking.

Moreover, when you connect the headphones to your chest, music playback pauses (magnetizing them to the neckband, unfortunately, does not work), and “uncoupling” the connected headphones during incoming call automatically accepts it. This is convenient - you don’t have to additionally reach for the control buttons. But in order to always be able to use this function, you will have to get into the habit of connecting the “ears” on your chest.

In addition to the “magic” magnetic connection, the headset has four controls: on the right side of the mount there is a power/receive call/pause button, “louder” and “quieter” buttons (holding them, we switch tracks in the player), and on the right there is a button with microphone icon, calling Siri (on iOS), Google Now (Android) or Cortana (Windows 10 and 10 Mobile, does not work with Russian yet). During a call, pressing this key will temporarily mute the microphone.

With voice transmission via headset full order, the interlocutors, when asked about the quality of communication, invariably answered that everything was ok. The microphone additionally has wind protection so that voice quality does not deteriorate outdoors. Rain (or sweat during workouts) is also not a problem for the Jabra Halo Smart (dust and moisture protection rating is IP54), but you shouldn’t take a shower in it.

Now let's talk about how the Jabra Halo Smart plays music. He plays decently, better than many and no worse than others. There are quite convincing bass, mids in a wide range, and clear, ringing highs are also not forgotten. The sound is great for jazz, RnB or complex electronics, but noisy rock can turn into an acoustic mess in the midrange. But this, by and large, is the nitpicking of the owner of spoiled ears. The sound of the Jabra Halo (yes, not audiophile) is still noticeably better than the standard headphones of even flagship smartphones.

And one more thing: in order to fully appreciate the sound of the 10 mm headset drivers, it is very important to choose the size of the replacement earbuds (in the box, in addition to the default “medium” ones, there are 3 more options: XS, S and L) so that they fit as securely as possible . The default size fit best in my ears, but it was also not perfect - if I turned my head or chewed, the fit of the “plugs” was quickly broken. The remaining sizes generally fell out almost immediately. What can I say - I was just unlucky with my anatomy; the comfort of wearing any “plugs” greatly depends on the structure of the ear.

Now about, perhaps, the most strong side Jabra Halo Smart - autonomy. The manufacturer promises up to 22 days of standby time, up to 17 hours of talk time and up to 15 hours of music playback. Testing confirmed that, in general, there is no reason not to trust these statements - listening to music on the headset for an hour or two every day, I was not able to discharge it completely in a week.

Of course, for people who have to make a lot of calls, one charge of the device is unlikely to last for a week. But you can discharge Halo Smart in one day, unless you play music in it from early morning until late evening (your ears won’t thank you for this, take care of your hearing from a young age). None of the devices of the same class and price can boast of such autonomy. The headset does not take very long to charge, about an hour and a half.

It remains to talk about the Jabra Assist application - it is available for iOS and Android, in the case of Android capabilities much more - one of those cases where iOS's limitations are truly frustrating. The program (in addition to Jabra Assist itself, for Android you will need to install another one, the system Jabra Service) displays the remaining battery charge in the form of a notification in the system curtain and can separate notice warn about low battery.

You can set up voice reading of messages from SMS, WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger (Russian is supported), email messages and upcoming calendar events. For iOS, only the calendar and reading the sender header of mail messages are available (you need to set up an account in the application, it only works with IMAP). Finally, there is a headset search function - it saves the last location of the device, you can view it in the application. You can also search for Halo Smart by making it play a high-frequency sound that is clearly audible even at a distance sound signal(in the application the function is called “Beacon”).

The iOS version also seems to be able to do much of the above, but in my case (iPhone 6s Plus on iOS 10.0.1) there was neither a charge indication nor a headset search function - only settings for reading mail and calendar, tips for use and a manual user.

In general, the headset turned out to be functional, perfect for both “work” and “for music.” What we were most pleased with was the high battery life and the feature with magnets. However, I would like the device for 6,000 rubles to have a neater design and nicer materials; in addition, I was disappointed by the fact that many of the declared capabilities were actually missing from the iOS application (maybe it’s because the software is not ready for iOS 10?)

For several years now, I have been closely following the development of the audio component of modern devices. Today, Apple began to abandon 3.5 mm. connectors followed suit, and many Chinese manufacturers took this step. Moreover, the latest models of Hi-Fi players also began to support wireless interfaces. At first glance, the very presence of the arc seems unjustified, but there is one thing. The design of the arc itself hides a very capacious 230mAh battery, which allows you to talk for 17 hours or enjoy music for about 15.

On the left side there is a single button responsible for calling the assistant; for iOS it is Siri, for Android it is Google Now. I am sure there will be business people who will appreciate the ability to search the Internet “on the go” and issue commands to the system.

Next to the button is a microphone with wind and water protection. Everything said in the characteristics is true - talking in a strong wind is almost as easy as in complete calm. The call quality is slightly lower than that of music, but quite sufficient for telephone conversations.

INTERFACE

To expand the functionality of the headset, Jabra has released additional software, consisting of a service part, Jabra Service, and an interface part, Jabra Assist.

The point of this application is to add the ability to read messages and letters directly while using the headset. By default, the Pico TTS voice engine is used, but it does not support the Russian language, so I installed the Google Speech Synthesizer application on my Android smartphone.

SOUND

Speaking about the sound of Jabra Halo Smart, it is necessary to immediately clarify the absence of the Apt-X codec, for the so-called Lossless Bluetooth. Testing was carried out on a Meizu MX4 Pro smartphone with a top-end SABER ES9018K2M DAC and a TI OPA1612 professional amplifier. In my case, during a Bluetooth connection, the signal was processed by the AAC codec - this is a completely universal codec with a quality superior to the currently popular MP3, however, I consider it unnecessary to download Flac and APE for listening to the Jabra Halo Smart.

Subbass is deep, contoured, leaving the main rhythmic position for the bass. The bass is a little raised, but it is done truly exquisitely - there is just enough of it as needed. I am sure that all lovers of proper bass will be satisfied with it. Mids and highs are in their place. The detailing for a bluetooth headset with the AAC codec is good.
